no mail sounds after installing El Capitan

Go to Mail/Preferences/General/New messages sound and make sure that you have a sound selected because it might be set to None.

Nope. New mail sound is set.

Now I am getting New Mail sounds SOMETIMES when I have new mail, and sometimes not.

Even more bizarre: new mail sound when deleting messages. Sometimes.

Maybe we need 10.11.3 to get rid of all of the bugs.

There's another thing I consider a bug: insert a photo card to your card reader, and Photos is launched. I don't want it launched.

Mail sounds have now returned (But not the fetch mail sound) in the latest 10.11.2 Update (OS X El Capitan) Fingers crossed!

I'm finding the same problem. No sound when a new email arrives, but I get a 'Bing' when I delete the said email. Unbelievable......ha,ha! This just gets funnier by the update!

Have now found that Banners/ Alerts have also disappeared in my POP 3 account, even though they are activated in Notification Centre, so am actually worse off than before the update. Suddenly, I'm not laughing!

Same here. Big laugh. Not.

With the update (which I did by downloading the El Capitan 10.12.2 Combo update and doing a "clean" install), the alert for incoming email is spotty. The first mail download after opening the program will not play the alert until you delete something. Subsequent email downloads (I have my settings set to check every minute) will have the alert sound after download. So it's not perfect, but better than before.

This is a stupid question: aren't these things checked *before* an update goes out, or was this problem actually never addressed for this update, and we got lucky?

I have alert sounds in all my POP accounts, but not IMAP.

Yesssss. Very Very annoying! I do not have Photos set to open when inserting a flash card, but it does! What's up with that?

I have no alert sounds (at incoming mails) at all after update OS X 10.11.2 . Very annoying!

Try changing Mail----Preferences----General-----Check for new messages: to every minute. Close mail and restart your machine. See what happens.

My latest test results:

Outgoing mail sound (whoosh) always sounds.

No sound for Get Mail if there is no mail.

If there is incoming mail, sometimes the incoming mail sound plays; other times it does not. Trying to determine why this is.

If there is mail but the incoming sound does NOT play, then deleting or junking that message produces the incoming mail sound. Replying to the message or Forwarding it does not produce the incoming mail sound.

I always check for mail manually.

Added note: if incoming mail sound does not play, it appears that deleting ANY message produces the incoming mail sound.
