no mail sounds after installing El Capitan

I just installed El Capitan and the first thing that I have noticed is that the normal sounds that apple mail puts out do not come out of the speakers. iTunes works fine but not then mail sounds. Any help would be appreciated

Thanks - tried everything more than once but nothing works. In looking back to previous discussions - even back to Mavericks this has consistently been a problem. Some don't have it and some like you get lucky but many users are simply unable to fix it. Hard to understand how such a seemingly simple issue can be such a persistent problem but it is and it's so pervasive that they should devote the necessary resources to correct it once and for all.

Changing to IMAP instead of POP mail solved many of my problems with Mail -- but not all. For example, if I have a bunch of messages in the Trash folder, select all of them and try to delete, they all seem to get deleted briefly, but then some of them re-appear. Ones that are Junk get deleted first. I have to go back, select all again, and delete again for all of them to permanently get removed.

The Trash has an arrow at the left hand side and there you will see two other trash bins 1) 'On my Mac' and 2) .........@domain.com. I haven't figured out why but empty all three to get rid of all trash.

I just wish we could all transport back to Mountain Lion before all these problems started. The Mac has lost its way badly. Microsoft must be laughing all the way to the bank!

Well, this morning I was looking for something else but decided to check out my settings again for sound for incoming Mail. I did two things and since then - I'm getting a Basso sound for incoming Mail.

The first thing was in System Preferences and went to NOTIFICATIONS where I changed from ALERTS to BANNERS and made sure that the 'Play sound for notifications' box was checked.

The second thing I did was go into SOUND and unchecked 'use ambient noise reduction'.

I'm not sure whether either of these has made a difference but it is coincidental that I am now getting a sound........three arrived whilst I've been typing this....fingers crossed that it stays with me.

I found the sound problem was resolved when I changed my mail accounts to IMAP -- but these problems seem to me to indicate that Apple is putting out software with unresolved quirks nowadays. One that I still have with Mail is that when I select all and try to delete a bunch of messages from Trash, only some get deleted. Junk mail ones are the first to go. I have to delete again to get rid of all of them.
