If you expect software to be perfect it's a bad assumption.

BTW, I pay my doctor regardless if I get a bad diagnosis or not. Sometime things aren't fair.

I went through the litany that was described above, but no alert sounds resulted. All it got me was having to reset my Mal account settings, and the directions posted for getting to the User folder via the Library produces different results than those shown by the Tidbits book. My window only shows two columns with data, with the last two empty. And Users does not appear in any column. Maybe that book was published prior to El Cap, but my copy does not match the book's.

I know that you mean well, but this isn;'t working for me. Apple broke this, and I would hope that they will fix it. In over 20 years as an Apple user, this is a first for me.

Can you post a screenshot of your Finder window showing your User's folder in column view mode?

With all dues respect, we weren't driving this debacle, Apple was. If Apple breaks my car Apple is obligated to fix my car. There is absolutely no way that I'm up for losing years of data in Mail, so starting over a a new user is not something that interests me.

No, I expect software or any other product to be fit for purpose! I pay a huge premium in the U.K for Apple products on the basis that they 'Just work.' I don't know what country you live in, but if it is in America I would imagine that a bad doctor's diagnosis, if serious, would result in a lawsuit!

This was a problem that was identified at the Beta release in August. So why are you suggesting that it is the users fault that there are problems with mail?

You have your User's Library selected.

If you had selected Carl's Stuff > Macintosh HD instead of your Home folder carlstone (this is your User) you would see the User's folder listed with carlstone as a user.

I'm not suggesting it's the users fault. I'm suggesting that the problem with the problem files is in the User's folder.

You can spend all day pointing fingers but that's not going to help solve your issues with no sounds. The problem is fixed in OS X 10.11.1. If it's not fixed for you, then you have to correct the problem in your User's folder.

Starting over in a new User does not mean you loose your data.

I think people are angry at this problem and are in danger of shooting the messenger here...

I do have a question though... are you saying the problem is fixed for you with the 10.11.1 update? or did you have to go through the steps you suggested earlier. ?

I tried with a guest user as a quick check as you suggested earlier but I still had no incoming mail sound...

One odd thing I noticed when I logged in as guest was that the mountain range screen image was sharp. On my normal log in this is very out of focus.. I assumed it was Apple being arty but perhaps there is another problem as well - which might suggest there are corrupted system files I suppose.

I am currently downloading the installer again, do you know where it is downloaded to by any chance? I have downloaded it before but it does not appear on my machine...

Yeah, I found that folder, but, I didn't know what to do once I was in there. Currently I'm DLing El Cap once again, whole 10.11.1 combo this time.

How is it, then, that so many people are experiencing the same problem? I had no problem with the previous O.S, so why now are so many having this difficulty. Any finger pointing must be firmly in Apple's direction. I have been using their products, I am quite sure, for much longer than you have. Therefore, a lecture is very much unwelcome. This is the first time that I have had such difficulties, and would appreciate a remedy from Apple forthwith.......
