Why is it so slow to download El Capitan?

That should not affect the speed of the download, as you only need to do the name lookup once.
However, Apple does have different servers, and it is possible a different DNS server gave you a different download server, maybe one that was inside your ISP's network and not coming across a backbone interconnect.
For me, the speed of the download worsens when I download OS X El Capitan. Even when I visit the website (this discussion), it doesn't load the website on Safari.
I think my problem is that I'm actually using OS X Lion and tried these solutions, it actually worsens...
Stop the download in App store and go to apple menu about this Mac > software update – click and it'll magically be faster!

Just replying another fresh experience and my opinion, maybe it helps others, because IT'S STILL A PROBLEM.
All the "DNS tricks" are not working if you're not in USA. Even greatest markets' customers are suffering randomly. I'm a Hungarian resident, believe me we are one of the smallest market of Apple I think.
I had to do a clean install this weekend on my mid 2014 MBP 15" Retina. Totally erased SSD, and after that it wasn't able to reinstall Yosemite. It restarted itself, downloaded Mavericks within 20 minutes. Terrible step back, but anyway, it worked. After that I tried to upgrade to El Capitan which fit for me previously well. It was so slow that showed me a week to download. I couldn't understand this. Than I changed my mind and started to download Yosemite to find out whether Apple servers are slow or something went wrong with my connection. I downloaded Yosemite within 44 minutes, all the other purchased apps were downloaded hyper fast.
I'm not a geek, but logically I think that only the El Capitan main OS product has got some problem regarding download speed. I tried every trick but nothing helped me.
A few minutes ago I stopped the App Store download. In the App Store menu (header) I chose the Debug -› Clear Cookies and after that Debug -› Reset Application. And I closed the App Store. Then I clicked on Apple logo in top-left corner, About this Mac -› Software update, which pushed me to the App store where I clicked on Free upgrade at El Capitan.
I don't know for sure whether this made the magic but download time was only 20 minutes. I should be happy.. .I should... but I'm not satisfied at all after I bought a product for 2500 USD which works well, but I have to struggle with things like this. Most of the consumers doesn't even know what debug is, or what is the relation between the problem and cache clearing.
And I still see people writing about this problem since last September but I couldn't find an official announcement from Apple.

I have also tried all the DNS changes - unsuccessfully. I donot know what you mean by 'In the App Store menu (header) I chose the Debug -› Clear Cookies'. There is no debug in App Store on my Mac mini. Basically I am stuck with a 10 hour plus download estimate on this OS.
See my post from Apr 25 above. Stop download from Apple store and go to "about this mac" under Apple Menu top left of computer screen, choose "About this Mac" then click on button "Software Update" there. Should speed things up continuing the download directly from there. Good luck!
Thanks for that but it just takes me back to Apple Store and the ultraslow download. Still stuck….
Worked for me and most people, once the slow download resumes it goes a lot faster. I got the solve from another thread on here. Sorry it didn't work for you though, hope that you find a fix soon.

I tried to quit App Store application and go to the free upgrade through the Apple logo › About this Mac › System update, but it didn't accelerated at all. Only after I cleared the cookies in the App Store.app
Probably it differs by systems. What helps to somebody, might not work for other people; I don't know why, ***** that even Apple seems to be not aware why this happens.

Thanks Lipaz, I did as you suggested, got the Debug menu, cleared the cookies, reset the app, relaunched the download: no change...
Every time it goes back to the exact same speed - 6s per MB, regardless of when I do it or what 'remedy' I have tried. So, still stuck...
I'm sorry. 😟 This problem really should be solved by Apple, even if it's an OSX or account or server error. We are customers and not IT professionals. It's abnormal.

I signed into my VPN of choice. Then Paused and Resumed the download. This brought the update up from 2+ DAYS to just under 45 minutes.
