I have a cablematters.com USB ethernet adapter and went to their Web site and found the driver. Installed it, Macbook Air restarted and the USB Ethernet adapter is now working. The driver must have been missed when the El Captain upgrade was installed.
I have INSIGNIA USB to Ethernet not detected. I installed driver from here: http://www.nikvdp.com/technotes/getting-non-apple-ax88772-usb-ethernet-to-work-o n-mavericks/
and it works now.
OS X El Capitan
Version 10.11.1
I have just removed that file, deleted all the netowrk panel settings and rebooted.
Now, none of the network locations will create a new Thunderbolt config and only allows me to enter a Wifi setup.
WHAT is going on with this. Used to work prefectly.
From system information I got this
USB 10/100 LAN:
Product ID: 0x8152
Vendor ID: 0x0bda (Realtek Semiconductor Corp.)
Version: 20.00
Serial Number: 00E04C362A54

Manufacturer: Realtek

I am also having this problem, but the solutions above did not work...

Is there an official issue somewhere for this?
I have a iMac (late 2009) and the only thing that is not working after installing el capitan is the ethernet.
The message is "Either the cable for Ethernet is not plugged in or the device at the other end is not responding."
I tried few of the suggestion described here but still not working.
I wanted to try to install again the driver of the ethernet but I cannot find them anywhere, could you help me?
You will have to download the driver from the manufacturer or vendor of the ethernet adapter you use with your iMac. (I am assuming you have a Macbook Air or Pro laptop which does not have an ethernet connector only wifi.) You just have to download the driver to your "downloads" folder, double click it and follow any installation instructions that may appear. The OX operating system does the rest.
If you are using an iMac desktop computer go to system preferences > network and check the configuration of the ethernet setup. Make sure your ethernet cable is securely connected at the iMac and router. The small round circle next to "Ethernet" should be green if properly connected and DHCP has assigned an IP address for the MAC.
Where are these drivers?
Hi @KarlNic;
I recently bought a "KY-688 Usb 3.0 Hub + Ethernet" device and I can not find any driver for Ethernet.
Do you or anyone else find any driver for this device?

This solved the problem for me plus additional steps. On a MacBook Air early 2015. Ethernet to Thunderbolt not recognizing on the Network Preference. So it goes like this:
— Delete all network interfaces in System Preferences > Network
— Delete file /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/NetworkInterfaces.plist (and maybe you can need delete file /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist) *I've deleted the Macintosh HD//Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist.old too if you have it*
- Plug in the ethernet to Thunderbolt/USB.
- Restart
- It's automatically recognized and added on the Network Preference. For some it may not be automatically added, you'll need to manually add it.
Hi,
I have the same problem. I have been using the Ethernet ports on my 17' MacBook Pro for years. I have problems with the onboard ethernet so I use a thunderbolt ethernet connection as well. I have noticed it's been taking longer and longer for the Ethernet connect to work after a boot or the computer goes to sleep.
This morning I started the computer up and only WiFi works. I reset the PRAM. Deleted all the interfaces etc. got rind of the plist, with no luck. System profiler does not even see the Ethernet card.
I booted my Clone backup and the Ethernet works on that. If i boot back to the SSD drive Ethernet stops working o its a software problem.
I am at a loss to understand whats happened. I would rather not spend 4 hours restoring my backup.
Any suggestions welcomed.

It seems like Apple broke something in the last update... I'm having the same problem on my Macbook Pro 2015. Everything was working fine yesterday...
Replacing the /System/Library/Extensions/AppleKextExcludeList.kext with an older copy has got my Ethernet working. I am not sure it's the final solution because if you create a new network location and add Ethernet interfaces (Builtin Ethernet and Broadcom Thunderbolt Ethernet they do not become active.
Something similar happened on my iMac - the ethernet cable was working fine until this morning. However none of the above solutions worked for me.
The final thing I tried was PRAM and NVRAM reset and I was forced (by the computer) to do a complete OS re-install (which failed on the first attempt after an hour and a half). The Ethernet port thankfully re-appeared in System Preferences (Network) after the 2nd installation.
Apparently Apple pushed a silent update between Thursday and this morning. Mine ceased to work this morning. The fix is simple, but takes time.
- Close down all apps (Quit)
- Leave WiFi turned On
- Remove USB Ethernet and Thunderbolt Ethernet adapaters
- Turn Off laptop
- Turn On laptop holding COMMAND + R (note: it's Command + R, not Command + Option + R)
- Release when you see the gray screen appearing for at least 5 seconds
- Choose "Restore OS" (you will need to authenticate your computer with your AppleID)
- The restoration of the OS will not erase your data. The process takes approximatelly 1 hour
- Go for a walk or to the bar
- By then your computer will have restarted and you should login
- Power-cycle your router/switch
- Under PReferences, open Networks and plug your Thunderbolt Ethernet with the network cable arleady attched to it.
Voilá!
