This just happened to me this morning. But I lost my ethernet before the update. I was at 10.11.2 this morning. I have just done the update to 10.11.3 and now my ethernet is back and working fine. No OS re install needed.
Caution:
------------------
Situation:
1. Attached Thunderbolt Ethernet Adapter
2. Open Terminal.app
3. Executed following: sudo dmesg | grep -i "ethernet"
Got back things related to adapter in question:
..
Feb 28 00:19:40 <censored> kernel[0]: Kext com.apple.iokit.AppleBCM5701Ethernet is in exclude list, not loadable
Feb 28 00:19:40 <censored> kernel[0]: Can't load kext com.apple.iokit.AppleBCM5701Ethernet - not found.
...
Troubleshooting:
1. Took a look in to this .plist file which has excluded kexts listed:
/System/Library/Extensions/AppleKextExcludeList.kext/Contents/Info.plist
and found out that it indeed had my Thunderbolt Ethernet Adapter listed as "AppleBCM5701Ethernet" under key "OSKextExcludeList".
2. Tried to remove "AppleBCM5701Ethernet" key from the list, but failed as even root user could not write to file
-> Probably feature of System Integrity Protection which I know I've on
Solution:
1. With rMBP shutoff turn it on while pressing and holding CMD + R to enter recovery
2. In recovery mode I had to first unlock my Mac OS X volume with Disk Utility as I have FileVault on
3. After closing Disk Utility, Utilities -> Terminal
4. vi /Volumes/<your system partition name>/System/Library/Extensions/AppleKextExcludeList.kext/Contents/Info.plist
5. Removed key-line "AppleBCM5701Ethernet" and corresponding string-line
6. Saved the edit and closed the Terminal
7. Rebooted to Mac OS X (when I did this Mac OS X started loading system after password input and suddenly rebooted in middle of loading, after asking for the password again system loaded up normally
8. Preferences -> Network now shows the Thunderbolt Ethernet Adapter correctly and the connection is working
------------------
PS.
Looking back what could have caused the Thunderbolt Ethernet Adapter to suddenly stop working I remembered that I had installed VirtualBox 5.0.14 just days before and after first restart after that the adapter stopped working. This might be totally unrelated to the real cause, but was only thing that came to mind.
Apple has now released a version 3.28.2 that will install over the bad extension.
The link here from post 37 is that update: http://swcdn.apple.com/content/down...n0573nt31ifb45/AppleKextExcludeList_10_11. pkg
I found this at MacRumors and it works to fix a bad file in the latest update. Reboot after install and your ethernet will be there.
Thanks for the pointer. I just updated my Mac Mini this morning and the Ethernet stopped working. Wifi worked ok, but not Ethernet.
I applied the patch and everything is working correctly now.
Awesome Terry! This worked a treat. Ethernet now up and running.
Previously I tried PRAM reset -nothing. Deleting/adding network settings - nothing. Even tried restoring to a previous backup - nothing
I've also had this problem start yesterday. I upgraded to El Capitan two weeks ago. Interestingly, I had a second problem which stopped me doing updates via the App Store and, when I signed out, I could not sign back in.
After a few hours with Apple support, I think I have this fixed. And yes, when the Ethernet problem was fixed, it also immediately fixed my App Store issue.
In Terminal, we entered:
sudo softwareupdate --background
And that's it! All working here.
Thanks Terry - This worked brilliantly. I had been trying since Saturday Morning to get this up and running - the wireless was okay, but it niggled me that the imac (just over a year old) had what seemed to be an hardware issue - I even ordered a USB to Ethernet Adaptor!
Just glad everything is working correclty now.
Thanks again
I can't thank you enough. I tried everything and was beginning to think the ethernet port had just died when I found this link. After the restart ethernet is back!
Again thank you!
thanks terry.... it worked for me!!
I have discovered the “No Ethernet” problem that many users are having and now I have discovered this thread.
My ethernet and wifi seem to be working fine here and I am wondering why I do not have a problem.
I noticed that the version of the file in question for me is vs. 2.13 with an installation date of 2/3/15.
I am running El Capitan 10.11.3 and have not had any updates that I know of.
Any thoughts about what I should/should not do ?
Hi TTabby,
I was also running El Capitan ver 10.11.3. The last update was automatically installed via the App store on Feb. 4, 2016. My ethernet port disappeared yesterday morning. Since the issue isn't affecting your computer, I wouldn't do anything if I were you. It only seems to be affecting some and the solutions are varied -- from what I've been reading on this post.
If the Ethernet connection on your Mac stopped working recently - Apple Support
Here is Apple’s support document on the subject. If your ethernet is working you don’t need to do a thing.
AnitHawk,
How do I do the same but for enabling the wifi instead? I had disabled my wifi since I was only using my ethernet and everything was working fine until I rebooted my macbook pro, then all the sudden I had no connection, either ethernet or wifi. I was able to use my iPhone as a hotspot to fix my ethernet, but my wifi still not working. I have a early 2011 MacBook Pro.
Thank you!
OK, thanks rehpia5 and lkrupp, I will just sit tight with this.
If anything happens, at least I will have a clue to what is up.
The fix explained simply for people who are not very familiar with terminal.
