Same problem. Ethernet adaptor not recognised on Macbook 2015. (Either the cable for USB Ethernet is not plugged in or the device at the other end is not responding) I managed to get it working by...

Go to System PReferences

Go to Network

Click Ethernet

click Advanced

Click Hardware Tab

Change to Configure Manually

Speed: Select Auto Select.

and it started working.

I briefly had a message you are connected but no IP address and then IP address appeared automatically.

Hey!

This solved my issue after having already tried SMC and NVRAM resets, thank you!

I'm using a HP USB Ethernet Adapter (black with a 3 inch wire). It suddenly went unresponsive in one of my USB ports on my MacBook Pro, but worked in the other port. I wondered why and just rebooted my laptop, worked for a while. Then start of the following week it went completely unresponsive. The adapter and ethernet wire worked fine though, verified that on another machine. The lights on the adapter also came to life after a machine reboot, but as soon as OS X was finalizing it final loading bar before the login screen, all lights went blank.

Manually finding the hardware under Advanced options in Network preferences and setting it to manual configuration with Speed: autoselect, did the trick for me. I now do not have a "USB Ethernet" option in the network list, but an alphanumeric code corresponding to the adapter's signature.

I cannot believe that I should be struggling to get the ethernet connection working again on a brand new iMac. None of the suggestions have worked. Even using terminal to update.

The router is working perfectly well for 2 other ethernet connections and the Mac works with WiFi. It has been working fine for the last 2 weeks, the total time I have had the **** thing. How long will I have to wait 'til Apple send an update that corrects this mess? If Apple can send a busted update they can send a

good one. Can't they?

This is my second iMac, the first one 10 years ago so I decided now was a good time to replace it. Bad mistake.

Come on Apple, help us users to use the things not have to delve into the OS to get a simple connection working.

What's going to stop working next?

I'm going to bed now, I have had enough.

Further to my last post.

Yesterday, Saturday 30 April, I telephoned `Apple help in the UK.

With the help of Alan and Richard I finally got the problem resolved.

It took us 90 minutes and the hands-on help of Richard to get my iMac back connected to the internet

via ethernet cable. It was not straightforward at all and I have no idea what the problem was so

I cannot help anyone with the solution. All I can say is that Richard reset all the hardware to the default

settings but we went to areas of the Mac that I wouldn't normally touch. There were times where they could

have just said "contact your ISP" as the problem was connected to the router.

We also dumped about 20Gb of junk I had imported from my last Mac. That had nothing to do with the

problem but does show, I think, that the guy was being helpful and took the time to go further than just

sort out the main problem

So, all in all I have nothing for praise for the way these to chaps went about solving my problem and

making me feel better about Apple!

And no, I don't work for Apple!

So my advice as of now is if you have not already contacted Apple customer service give it a try, it worked for me.....
