JPEG green in Preview.app on OS X 10.11

Hello everyone, that my first message here, i'm using a Mac almost 8 years and never has a problems that i can't solve by myself, but this time i tried everything and don't know what else to do.

I have a Mac Mini late 2014 (8Gb RAM, Intel HD 5100) with OS X 10.11, the problem is when i open JPEG photos(not every JPEG, more detailed i'll explain below) in a Preview.app the screen of Preview.app turns green like you can see in a screenshot below, some it times also crashes, i'll leave the crash report at end of a message

Does anyone have same Mac Mini with the OS X 10.11? i want to know if that is software bug or it's a hardware problem? any ideas what that can be?

User uploaded file

Here a list what i have tried

  • I have installed twice clean OS X, that did not helped.
  • Checked with Apple Diagnostics and it nothing found.
  • Checked RAM with Memtest86 i did 3 passes that took almost 5 hours, no errors found.
  • If i "save as..." the JPEG that turns green in to PNG or TIFF then it opens normally, after saving it back to JPEG again it turns green...
  • As i said in beginning not every JPEG turns green, example any photos 15MP from my Canon 500D they all green, but photos from iPhone 4S they open normally, after that i tried to resize a photo from Canon 500D to 40%, after resize they shown normally, then i tried to resize iPhone photo to 300%, i expected that it will turn green after resize, but strange it still open normally, also a panorama photo from iPhone are green...
  • In a Safari.app every photo opens normally.
  • In a Safe Mode they also open normally.(maybe the problem is in rendering?)

Here if anyone want to try i compressed and uploaded 2 photos, one from Canon camera and one from iPhone(link)

Here is the the crash report of Preview.app (link)

Thank you

Alex.

My late 2014 Mac Mini is a 2.6GB i5 with 16 gig of ram and a fusion drive and I'm getting the same problem. Don't get the problem at all on my early 2014 1.7GB core i7 11" Macbook Air with 8 gig of ram.

Selecting the size to "Size on Screen equals size on printout" has fixed the issue on the Mini and I can zoom in to full size.

I also found that the green screen images would render perfectly even with the size set to "1 image pixel equals 1 screen pixel" as long as I subsequently opened at least one other image then clicked on the green image's thumbnail. Weird.

Also having done the "Size on Screen equals size on printout" thing and got it working I have now reset the size to "1 image pixel equals 1 screen pixel" and all the images continue to display normally. Double weird.

Under Preferences -> Images, selecting "Size on screen equals size on printout" settles the green screen issue with Landscape images (6000 x 4000).

However, went viewing Portrait images (4000 x 6000), the green screen appears.

When running the "ColorSync Utility", "Profile First Aid", "Verify" reports 4 bad profiles with bad MD5.

"Repair" failed because the files are locked.

The bad profiles are as follows:

/System/Library/ColorSync/Profiles/ACESCG Linear.icc

Header message digest (MD5) is not correct.

The file is locked. Could not be fixed.

/System/Library/ColorSync/Profiles/ITU-2020.icc

Header message digest (MD5) is not correct.

The file is locked. Could not be fixed.

/System/Library/ColorSync/Profiles/ITU-709.icc

Header message digest (MD5) is not correct.

The file is locked. Could not be fixed.

/System/Library/ColorSync/Profiles/ROMM RGB.icc

Header message digest (MD5) is not correct.

I am unable to change the files permission so can't repair them at the moment.

Just another voice here acknowledging the same issue. Just copied a high resolution panorama picture off my iPhone and tried to open it. You get a brief glimpse of the actual picture before what looks like tiles zoom across the image, and it's completely green.

System is a Late 2014 Mac Mini with 3GHz Intel Core i7 and 16GB RAM running OSX El Capitan.

Guess we're just waiting on a fix from Apple for now then.

Same problem here. I have 13" MacBookPro. Some photos cause Preview app to show green screen. Sometimes app will also crash.

I am so happy to find this thread, I was afraid that my pictures were broken. I tried to show pictures of my trip to Lapland to my parents, but I could not get the application to work.

So the problem is that Apple software is buggy. Hopefully Apple will fix this soon. Meanwhile I will tell my friends not to upgrade to El Capitan.

I also have a Mac Mini and all green after installing update. I have been an Apple user since the SE30 (1984) and I am constantly amazed that a company of this size and full of obviously very clever people, did not see this before getting us all to download the bloody thing. It's really a nuisance and it could be weeks before they come up with a patch. Just another case (like VW) of a big corp not giving a flying **** about their customers.
