Lost mail accounts after OS 10.11 upgrade

Just upgraded to El Capitan on my iMac. All went smoothly BUT when I now run Mail (9.0) all my accounts are missing and all I have is a dialog box asking me to set up new ones. This is catastrophic. How do I restore things apart from reinstalling Yosemite from backup?

Thanks.

iMac (27-inch, Late 2012), OS X Yosemite (10.10.4)

I just did the 10.11.2 upgrade and had the Mail updater screen in place for about 30 minutes, during which time I read this thread, panicking just a little because many of you speak advanced level computing, which is a bit like Egyptian hieroglyphics to me.

Be patient, someone said.

That's the best advice - and it worked for me.

I have the same question - can you have POP3 mail accounts while running 10.11.2 and Mail 9.2? If so how do you do it?

Do not like the the fact when I open Mail my emails from my gmail accounts are sent to “archive folders” and if they are not, then Mail uses the Rules I have established the email as sent to the appropriate folder. The PROBLEM is these email are deleted from other devices - iPhones and iPADs. If I can not rectify this I will have to go back to Outlook, which I don’t want to do.

I must say that I am really disappointed with Apple Mail/El Capitan that something so choking can happen. Suddenly I lost all mail boxes with some 20,000 mails while writing a new mail. I have been a Apple user for almost 15 years and never before experienced something like this. Fortunately, I followed your suggestion after I tried to make a new mail box with the same name as one of the lost ones. I got the information that such a mail box 'already exists'. Then I went into each archive mail box and pressed 'rebuilt' in the mailbox manu. It seems that all my mail boxes now are restored. Fortunately.

Thank you so much for announceing your experience.
