How well does iWeb work with El Capitan?

I've continued to use this old software with no significant problems with Yosemite, but plan on moving my website to another app fairly soon (probably EverWeb). However, I don't want to upgrade to El Capitan before I make this move if the upgrade significantly breaks iWeb.

Anyone have any experience with iWeb on OS X 10.11?

Thanks,

Dave

Editing a text block on a web page using iWeb did cause it to disappear. I used the hint on this thread to edit the text's font and turned on/off the "T" and the text appeared.

However, I had a rectangle with text in it that contained a hyperlink on the rectangle and the text box to download a file. I needed to point to a different file so I chose to relink the hyperlink to the new file. Once I published the webpage, both the rectangle and the text disappeared. They were still clickable when I put the cursor where they should be, but nothing I tried could get the rectangle or the text to reappear.

So, instead of a nice looking rectangle, I instead created a text box with text that said: "To download our job application, click here". Then I highlighted the word "here" and choose in Inspector to have a hyperlink on that word. Then I browsed to the file I wanted. Once I clicked on the file I wanted in zip format, iWeb changed the word "here" to the name of the file, in this case, called "job application", and made the changed word "here", now "job application" blue to indicate a hyperlink. Once I published the page, I was able to download the job application in zip format.

Hope this tip helps.

This is what has worked for me—

Link only the text, not the text box.

Where a background is desirable, use the color fill option, not the background fill.

If the linked text is over an image that is also linked, undo the image link.

If the link still doesn’t publish properly, try changing the font to something less exotic

I’ve been going through my site page by page changing my links to comply with the above and, with only a few exceptions, it has worked. The few times it hasn’t, I’ve simply reconstructed the link

in my previous post, I was a little quick to think I’d solved the problem … since then, newly created text links, though they work as links, refuse to show themselves no matter what I try … same old problem

I’ve another problem, a well. The pencils section of Apple’s new colour panel doesn’t load properly, can’t be resized and, if left for another section, its pencils disappear entirely, though their links remain active—just as they do in iWeb … I also use Apple’s colour panel in Photoshop Elements 11 and have the same problem there … the colours are available elsewhere, of course, so it’s not the end of the world, but it’s definitely a less-enjoyable one

I suspect only Apple can solve our iWeb problems and, since there are ****** few iWeb users these days, I doubt they’ll bother ... tom

Yes, of course you will because iWeb used iPhoto and cannot use the new Photos package and will never be able to because it has not been updated.

All you need to do is continue to use iPhoto rather than Photos with iWeb and if you don't want to do that, then you'll have to export your photos to your desktop and drag and drop them into iWeb instead.

hey thanks for this, major issues with my site and it's too big to transfer to another app easily/quickly. i am removing links from boxes and applying to text instead. not ideal but will at least work for now. if anyone works out how to resolve the issue overall i really need to know. thanks again.

Yes folks - I too have the EC upgrade problem of "after editing an existing page slightly, text boxes with links no longer appear (but mouse over and click reveals that the links are still there).

MY WORK AROUND IS THIS:

First -

Simply copy and paste all the text boxes you've linked. They should immediately paste slightly off center and ABOVE the existing TEXT box. At this point you can chose to "Send to Back" or can do it later. I also grabbed the center 'scaling dot ' on the right to extend the box a little bit to create an easily recognized separation tab and to differentiate between the two boxes.

Next - DISABLE the hyperlinked text box of the NEWLY created text boxes in the Inspector.

Finally - Line up the new text box perfectly with the arrow keys UNDERNEATH the old one, so it doesn't look too cluttered.

Sadly, while this creates one more step but, I've found it a worthy work around .. for now! **** you Apple! EverWeb.. here i come ..(i guess) 😟

David, I'm replying to both your message and to Sethgdurham. I have exactly the same problem that Seth was describing: once I upgraded to El Capitan, objects that are linked - it could be photographs that I imported or objects from the Insert Shape category - once they are linked, and I Publish Site Changes, they will appear on the iWeb program alright, but are invisible when seen on a browser, even though the links are there when you mouse over them. I tried all four browsers and all the devices I have. It's consistent. If I unlink an object and republish it is instantly visible again. I have two iMac's so I was smart enough to keep the other one running Yosemite, which works fine. I moved all my websites to the other computer, but obviously, I wish there was a remedy so that I could upgrade both computers to the same OS. Other commenters seem not to have mentioned this problem, but it's possible they have not yet discovered this issue. Conventional links, such as on words, work just fine.

In my naive world, I submitted my observations to Apple via both the Provide iWeb Feedback box and for the feedback box for El Capitan. Although I'm exploring EverWeb as a just-in-case option, I have hundreds of webpages and simply wish that Apple would produce a patch for this issue, or better yet a new version of iWeb, which I consider *their best program ever. My advice for anybody that has only one computer, don't upgrade to El Capitan, until you hear that this problem is resolved. By the way, republishing the site via Yosemite, resolves the issue.

*Anybody not familiar with the iWebFAQ.org resource should check it out to see what incredible stuff can be accomplished with this basic program.

You need to get real - yes you were naive to think that Apple will be interested in iWeb feedback - feedback for an unsupported product.

Apple are not likely to produce a patch for an unsupported product and for a product that has not been updated for 6 years now - be sensible about this - it is just not going to happen.

Unfortunately, as we have all said already, with each successive OS update, iWeb is going to become less and less compatible, so rather than wishing that Apple will produce a patch to fix an unsupported product, do not update your OS to El Capitan and stay with an OS that works with iWeb.

You need to realise that there is no further need for iWeb - it was introduced at a time when Apple brought out .Mac and then MobileMe, that offered web hosting. Once this was done away with and iCloud came into being that did not offer web hosting, but just plain storage, there was no further need for iWeb, so this is why Apple ditched it.

EverWeb is the closest to iWeb that you will ever find. You can transfer your sites slowly and do it gradually and then at least you are using up to date software that is not unsupported as iWeb is.

Your only solution now is to keep using iWeb with Yosemite, as Apple are not going to bring out any patch to fix anything and with an unsupported product are under no obligation to do so.

Richard,

Ethmoid is correct. Apple will not never update iWeb again and it will just get more and more broken with every OS X update. Eventually you will have to get a new computer that won't even be able to use Yosemite. Frankly, I'm surprised it has worked so well for so log, but I've decided it is past time to move on.

Like you, my website has hundreds of pages and it is painful to think about rewriting the entire site. However, I decided to recreate it using EverWeb. It really is very similar to iWeb, but offers many advantages. There are also a few disadvantages (masking is much less versatile), plus it cost money! It seemed a little expensive to me at first, but they have excellent 24/7 phone/email support and that isn't cheap. I mentioned my disappointment with their masking tool and they said they would consider improving it it a future version (we'll see). They do update the program regularly, so it should continue to improve.

Next, I have to find a replacement for Aperture. Moving from iWeb to EverWeb is child's play compared to moving from Aperture to Lightroom. At least Aperture still (mostly) works on El Capitan!

Thanks for everyone's response to my inquiry about iWeb on El Capitan.
