How well does iWeb work with El Capitan?

I've continued to use this old software with no significant problems with Yosemite, but plan on moving my website to another app fairly soon (probably EverWeb). However, I don't want to upgrade to El Capitan before I make this move if the upgrade significantly breaks iWeb.

Anyone have any experience with iWeb on OS X 10.11?

Thanks,

Dave

Sethgdurham, sadly I discovered a bug in iWeb that is El Capitan related which makes text invisible but not the underlying links.

Check your main menu iWeb > Preferences... and make sure that the third option 'Show text imaging indicator' is switched on.

Back in iWeb it will highlight all text that has been converted to graphics with a yellow badge

To ensure that your text looks identical on different computers and web browsers, iWeb converts some text—such as outlined text, text with a double underline or strikethrough, or text in an unusual font—to graphics when you publish the site.

At my initial El Capitan compatibility testing I didn't see that also on my own site some things have been rendered invisible whilst the underlying links were still working.

What I had done in the past was this: on the bottom of you iWeb window I clicked on fonts

In the Fonts dialog box I had switched on the capital T (blue when activated) for fonts shadow

Switching the fonts shadows off by clicking on the capital T again (black when deactivated) made all text visible again after FTP publishing.

Be sure to use web-friendly fonts though: back in the Fonts dialog go to the Collection list on the left and click 'Web'.

One peculiar thing though; not all of the shadowed fonts have become invisible - why - don't know - yet .....

But this sure is a bug that wasn't there before El Capitan!

David,

Only some of the linked text has disappeared and strangely some of them are things that have not changed in a year + and some of them were created the week before upgrading. Other links are just fine and look normal. Any new links will not work, but it is unique to this one site so far. My other two iWeb sites are working normally. They are much simpler sites. Two discoveries made this morning: 1. If I remove the links from the text, the text will appear on the site normally. 2. After publishing if I click on the "visit site now" button, I get a DNS error. Something in publishing has changed. If I type my URL in a browser, the site is there, but I can't get to it from that publishing box. Very odd.

Thank you for the response Cro-Nelis. I did not have any font shadows on, but went ahead and clicked them on and off to be certain. I am using Times New Roman to test and no luck yet. Please see my post to David. If the links are removed, the text will appear on the site so the issue has something to do with links it seems. Old links are mostly still there. No new linked text or images can be created. Maybe it is an issue with something corrupt on this one site in my files since my other two sites seem okay, but I am afraid to do too much testing since they are working correctly.

After a lot of testing with links and iWebs automatic 'text converted to graphics' my personal conclusion is:

In El Capitan iWeb has a problem with the combination of text that is converted to graphics which at the same time contains a hyperlink. In this case the text becomes invisible whilst the link will actually work. Individually a URL link or converted text to graphics will display without any problems. Prior to El Capitan this has never been a problem. I don't have a solution yet.

About your DNS error

If I click on the "visit site now" button after publishing, I do not get a DNS error and the site opens in Safari.

Make sure that in your 'Site Publishing Settings' you have typed at the bottom in 'Website ULR' your site's root URL

am having the same problem ... since upgrading to el capitan, navigation links and random content disappears from pages I attempt to change or add content to, though, as in your case, the unseen links continue to activate ... am nervous about attempting any further changes ... hope the problem goes away

For those who might try this, it didn't work! I took the text that was hyperlinked and duplicated it, then removed the hyperlinks from the duplicate. I put the original text in "back" and then laid the non-linked text on top of it in "front" thinking I would have a decoy that shows on top when published. It looked great, but after publishing it didn't work. The non linked text was also hidden. If I move it off the linked text, it will appear. Maybe that's a clue for the savvy people out there. Thanks for keeping the dialogue moving.

Thank you again Cro-nelis, I didn't touch the root URL text. This is the same as before EC and now it won't work. I tried retyping it, copying it and pasting it and in each case it takes me to an error message. Not a big deal because I can type the URL and get there of course. Just thinking this is all linked in some way. I really appreciate the ideas.

since upgrading to EC, only one of the 4 iWeb pages I’ve changed and attempted to publish, has published correctly—on the other 3, linked content has gone missing, though the links, themselves, remain active … I can find no common thread to explain why some items have disappeared and others haven’t … the page that published correctly was the smallest and simplest of the pages, the most damaged was the largest and most complex of the pages … could size be involved in some way? … am hoping Apple knows of our problem and is addressing it … I have a 91-page site, so have a lot at stake

GOOD NEWS! took another look at all my malfunctioning links and did the following:

1. I undid any background fill in the text and replaced it with area fill, and

2. where I'd linked both the text and the box containing it, I unlinked the box

These two steps restored my pages ... perhaps they will solve your problems, as well

Oct 6, 2015 10:25 AM in response to dkzn

I tried this and it didn't work for me; however I just restored a bunch of links by stripping the text box of all formatting i.e. no frame, no background fill, etc. and then deleting the link to the box itself and adding the link to the actual text in the box. This has worked for most of my links. It looks a lot more simple on the page, but at least the links are present now. Note, this is not working for all missing links, just some. Not sure why.
