ios 9.0.2 update -> Now touchscreen problems!

I updated my iPhone 5s 64g to iOS 9.0.2 from 9.0.1 last night over wifi, immediately the phone started misregistering my finger press and touch locations. The screen now intermittently opens apps, fails to allow the keyboard to be used correctly, will register touches when I am not even touching the phone. I had the phone in a lifeproof case (nuud) with screen protector (yes this is how it's supposed to be done!) - after the errors began I tried removing the case, removing the screen protector, and hard resetting the phone - this is NOT a hardware issue!

Hard resetting the iphone will sometimes clear the issue for a few minutes, then it begins again sporadically and intermittently - yet often enough that it is a huge headache to deal with. I can now pretty much only reliably use my phone through siri, and only then if I can get the phone to unlock from a hard reset! I spoke to apple support via chat, they recommended that I backup to icloud and restore the phone as "new iphone" and then only to restore data from the icloud backup. I made an appointment with my local "genius" bar (ugh do I hate saying that) though since this device is now outside of the 1 year warranty & applecare, And even though the update caused the error they will likely only replace the device with a replica for $269...

SUPER FRUSTRATED AT YOU APPLE!!! Give us a way to roll back these failed updates!!!

Update: When the iphone is plugged in to my macbook pro the touchscreen problems completely go away! possible emergency stop-gap solution... may as well tape my iphone to my macbook and walk around with it boombox-style. That's true apple swag.

What did the guy mean, when he said the problem is in the backup? Did he mean that some of your calendar info, contacts, and apps saved on your computers backup were corrupt, or did he think that the update has problems. Either way restoring from a backup would eventually bring the problem back. Still if the problem is temporarily fixed by taping it on a hard surface, it sounds like a hardware issue, and can't see how restoring the phone as new would help. The guy told me that updates can bring problems to the surface. 6 pages of people wt hardware issues though, only after the latest update. Something must be causing it though.

Maybe if you restored as new, and then didn't install this screwy 9.1 update, that has caused 6 pages of problems. I wouldn't restore from a saved iTunes backup though. I think that almost all info will probably sync over iCloud, and almost every app, can then be reinstalled using iTunes, a long as it is compatible wt your older IOS. Then I wouldn't update the iPod again, until Apple properly addresses this issue. Unfortunately they see to think ignoring the problem will make it go away 😟

Apple replaced my iPhone 5S with a new unit. At first, "Genius Bar" (Practically, they were/are not Genius at all) executives said its a touch screen issue and needs the replacement of the screen and I would need to pay for it as well. He thought I'm a dumb user and does not understand mobiles lol 😀 I mentioned him that I'm very technical person and understand phones + computers better then himself 😝 (My apologies but I had to say that due to the way they were reacting and explaining in technical way)

Then I contacted Apple executive who called me up for replacing the unit and upon his confirmation "Genius Guys" did replaced it without any charges.

New iPhone5S unit come with IOS 8.4.1, I upgraded it to 9.1, restored my back-up from the computer. So far I do not see touch issues anymore. I'm not big time mobile user, my use is very limited and mostly I use only for calls. Due to my very busy schedule I would need one more week to perform more tests but so far it looks convincing. I would like to say thank you to Apple executives who reached out to me over phone and helped out. Kudos!!!

I'm restoring from a back up in iTunes. He thinks there might be a corrupt file or something in the iTunes back up. He wanted me to reset the phone, update the firmware, and software to 9.1. Then set up the phone as new & sync my contacts, calendar etc via iCloud. I think it's a hardware issue and will be pursuing a hardware fix or phone replacement. The Apple warranty has run out, but fortunately my American Express extends the warranty for another year.

Completely locked out of my reasonably trusty iphone 5 now for 2-3 days. Can only force a restart with the two buttons (hold both down for 10 seconds). What a crock! Clearly a fundamental issue if you can't use the screen I but can't find anything coherent from Apple to fix. I'm an Apple ZEALOT since 1986 but for the first time, I'm stumped. Don't know what to do.

So disappointed in Apple, you guys.

They obviously messed up and are not owning up to their problems.

Iphone 6 here, been a little over a year. Exactly ONE month over my warranty. Updated my phone to 9.02, phone went bonkers and touchscreen didn't work. Blah blah. Went to the apple store, they told me to restore it as a new phone and update it to 9.1. It worked, I'm happy, I left...2 hours later I have the same problems!! Sigh.

2nd visit: told apple it's still not working. But of course while I'm there the iPhone works for 2 minutes. And he did all the tests and it's fine and doesn't do anything for me and obviously doesn't believe me, so he brushes me off and sends me away without any fixes!!!!

3rd visit: Obviously, my problem comes back later that day. Frustrated at my useless phone I come and show them the problem. They admit there's an issue and told me that the tests failed the previous time I was there. They guy didn't even tell me it failed. I am frustrated and appalled at their service. WHY DIDN'T HE TELL ME IT FAILED?! Next thing, the apple genius tell me my options are to replace the screen for $109 or buy a new phone $269 (or whatever I forget the exact number). I said NO, this is not my fault why do I have to pay for this!?!?! It's obviously the update problem and they want me to fork over money? After displaying how upset I was, they said, fine "we'll replace it to you as a courtesy" Sigh.

4th visit: Guess what? Phone with new screen is still having the same problems!!! Touchscreen is not working, and to a point that the force restart is not even working. Is this a joke Apple!?!? You initially wanted me to pay $109 knowing it wouldn't work!?!? SO FRUSTRATED!! I come back a FOURTH time and this apple guy tells me that HE WILL REPLACE THE PHONE, and they shouldn't have replaced the screen in the first place because IT WOULDN'T HAVE FIXED THE PROBLEM IN THE FIRST PLACE. NO KIDDING. THIS IS SO DUMB. So you wanted me to pay $109, and it wouldn't fixed a **** thing -- and no, I wouldn't be refunded that $109!!!!!

END OF MY STORY: Ok, sure I got a replacement phone. BUT DID I REALLY HAVE TO VISIT FOUR TIMES?!?!?! What a waste of my time. I live 40 minutes away from an Apple Store. Apple F*CKED up and they want their customers to PAY for their mistake?!?! APPLE YOU NEED TO FIX THIS RIGHT AWAY LOOK AT HOW MANY OF YOUR CUSTOMERS ARE AFFECTED; STOP IGNORING US AND STOP ACTING LIKE THIS IS NOT A PROBLEM AND BRUSHING US OFF. STOP TRYING TO MAKE MONEY OFF OF US FROM YOUR MISTAKE.

-VERY UPSET CUSTOMER!!!!

My experience was very similar to yours. My iPhone 6 plus started going bonkers exactly one month after the warranty expired. I went to the Apple store three times before I finally got a resolution. The person on my third visit admitted this was a known issue, but Apple doesn't have a quality program for it yet. They agreed to give me a new phone for the cost of replacing the screen- $109. I suppose if I had made a ruckus they probably wouldn't have charged me anything. I let it go because I bought the original phone with my AMEX and knew they would reimburse me for the cost under their extended warranty program. It's only a matter of time before Apple has to officially acknowledge this issue.

I have an iPhone 4s with the same touchscreen issues. I've only had the phone for 5 months and this started happening right after the update to iOS9.1. Screen will intermittently lock up during a phone call, keypad isn't responsive and the red hangup phone icon disappears. I can't even hangup from a phone call. The only way to get the call to hang up is to do a hard reset. This is really ridiculous. I've also recently had the entire icon for iMessages disappear and only got that back by doing a hard reset of the phone. The phone had been working just fine with iOS8 - it all started when I "upgraded".

This is why I HATE doing upgrades from Apple!! They always release stuff before doing extensive testing. We become the guinea pigs for them to test out what they should be doing before they release the software.

UPDATE - managed to force a complete wipe through iTunes (I do not understand iTunes and the whole music offering any more - is it me or had it become a bloated mess?).

So an unwilling system upgrade to 9.0.2 but no change - screen even more erratic if anything with random key stroke making it all but useless. I guess, logically this means it's officially a HARDWARE failure.

I guess realistically there are more than one or two reasons why this kind of fail happens but this thread generally assumes a link. The numpty who so enthusiastically declared 'eureka' after taking off his screen protector (nice one Sherlock) is a reminder that there's only so much this kind of self-help community can achieve. So I'm not convinced of a nasty software issue - there are millions and millions of these **** things out there and a percentage will fail. However, hearing of issues with newer models immediately after system upgrades is especially off-putting and should be something that Apple sorts out. I won't be spending money on a flashy new model until at least after the next OS upgrade.

I have the same issue with my 5c and my Ipad mini 2nd Gen. This is basically a business tool that apple not only uses but keeps secret among there employee's. They provide you a update that will falter your older device to drive you to purchase a newer more expensive model. If you wait awhile the following update usually adjust these issues. Unlike what i did, i have a few colleagues that are waiting and there devices are still working flawlessly.Apple will never change this method of updating because the amount of money they make is astronamical. Being apart of the tech world, i can reassure you (not that apple does) your device will work properly in due time.

Take Care,

Marc Apple since Day 1

I experienced the unresponsive screen for the first time today. I've come to the conclusion that whatever the issue is, it is somehow connected to the wifi connection. I was able to have my phone functionality return back to normal by disabling the wifi. I've had it up to my eyeballs with Apple's lack of efficient testing before releasing to the pubic. First it was the extremely disappointing iTunes 12.3.1 update, now its this crap with our devices!!!!!!!! 😠 In 10 years of being a loyal Apple customer, I'm appalled by such negligence on their behalf. Steve Jobs would be ASHAMED! Get your heads out of your cornholes APPLE!!!!!!!!!
