ios 9.0.2 update -> Now touchscreen problems!

I updated my iPhone 5s 64g to iOS 9.0.2 from 9.0.1 last night over wifi, immediately the phone started misregistering my finger press and touch locations. The screen now intermittently opens apps, fails to allow the keyboard to be used correctly, will register touches when I am not even touching the phone. I had the phone in a lifeproof case (nuud) with screen protector (yes this is how it's supposed to be done!) - after the errors began I tried removing the case, removing the screen protector, and hard resetting the phone - this is NOT a hardware issue!

Hard resetting the iphone will sometimes clear the issue for a few minutes, then it begins again sporadically and intermittently - yet often enough that it is a huge headache to deal with. I can now pretty much only reliably use my phone through siri, and only then if I can get the phone to unlock from a hard reset! I spoke to apple support via chat, they recommended that I backup to icloud and restore the phone as "new iphone" and then only to restore data from the icloud backup. I made an appointment with my local "genius" bar (ugh do I hate saying that) though since this device is now outside of the 1 year warranty & applecare, And even though the update caused the error they will likely only replace the device with a replica for $269...

SUPER FRUSTRATED AT YOU APPLE!!! Give us a way to roll back these failed updates!!!

Update: When the iphone is plugged in to my macbook pro the touchscreen problems completely go away! possible emergency stop-gap solution... may as well tape my iphone to my macbook and walk around with it boombox-style. That's true apple swag.

About the number of screen presses, before losing touch ability. At least for me, it seems to depend a lot on the app used. For instance I can use the simple app Calculator, w/o t ever failing to register touches, but soon after tying to use Safari, or Calendar, it will fail. It might have something to wt the amount energy it takes for these apps to work, IDK ... but the more energy intensive apps seem to cause it to fail faster.

Apps

I haven't noticed any specific app taking longer or shorter amounts of time for my phones' issue to start up again. On my 5s 64g it's entirely dependent if i'm connected to a power source (wall outlet or 12v car charger makes the issue active until the phone is disconnected from wall... when plugged in to a macbook the issue will *sometimes* completely go away until the phone is disconnected) or if I allow it to wait a few seconds between power cycling the screen. So far it seems that the best workaround for me is still by power cycling the screen off - wait 5 sec - then on. I use fingerprint ID to bypass my now ridiculously-easy lock code and I get around 8-15 accurate presses before the problem rears it's ugly head. If I quickly power cycle the screen without waiting a moment I may get only 1-2 accurate presses.

The good(er) news!

I have an appointment Friday afternoon (EST) to conference in with an apple engineering team to discuss the problem, fingers crossed the chat helps diagnose and generate an update fix (or maybe Apple might want to swap out my phone so they have one for testing on! HINT HINT!)

All, Today I spoken to Apple Engineering Team. Conversation lasted for more then 30 minutes. I have provided them with all tests I have performed so far and listed them all major & minor issues I have experienced after upgrading to 9.0.2 & then 9.1.

I'm really happy that Apple management does care about their customer unlike other companies does not even react to blogs or issues. They would use my phone as a test unit so they could perform more research on it and possibly fix it in next release. They have also promised to replace my unit by next week, which would be really helpful.

I really appreciate the time they are taking out to reach out to almost every possible customer.. Kudos to Apple team! Keep up the good work!

Today I got my iPhone 6 plus replaced as I am in support contract. I appreciate Apple's policy to replace the phone if the HW problem is not repairable. The engineer was not able to give me the root cause analysis (of course !!), however she suggested me that I should not update iOS over WiFi but should do it through iTunes.

I am keen to understand from Apple the RCA.

That's really great news. I just installed ios9.2 beta and sorry to say it's getting worse. its like stop action pictures it's so choppy and glitchy. Scrolling is like a 4 fps movie. It's time to seek other competitors. I had very high hopes for my iPhone 6+. Should've stayed on 8.4.x. I would still be happy. I should probably exchanged it first since I have Apple Care. What do you guys think? LMK. Omg!! That was a big long freeze when I was trying to type "LMK".

Thanks

I too have updated my Iphone 5 to 9.1 (build 13b143) . The touchscreen issue wherein it types by itself seems to have disappeared. However, the issue wherein the screen freezes is still there but not as frequent as it was in IOS 9.0.2. Random touches (touching one part but other part of the screen are the ones responding) are still there and I was also experiencing some issues wherein only part of the screen becomes unresponsive.

I agree with the good news part. I have also been contacted with an apple representative. It is actually a bit of a relief to know that they are currently working on the problem and their effort to contact me (US to SG) is very much appreciated. Hope they find the problem and the fix soon.

It's really great that some people in this forum had their units replaced are of charge. Unfortunately I did 'not' have the same experience when I visited the apple store, @ King Of Prussia Mall, in Pennsylvania. My previous iPod Touch was Version 9.1. Updating to 9.2, did not reduce touch problems, but only exacerbated them. I have a disability, and rely heavily on my iPod touch as a PDA. Since touch ability, is integral to using the iPod touch, I had been missing appointments, had no quick access, to my contacts, and couldn't even play music when I exercise at the gym. Me and my brother went to an apple store, and described the touch issue. We even mentioned this forum, and they claimed that people in here must also have hardware issues, and that updates can just bring them to surface. They also claimed to know nothing about a future update to fix this issue. My iPod touch was only 2 years old, so I have no idea why my hardware is failing. Anyway, after looking at my device, they claimed that the update must have brought an old hardware issue to light. Since my warranty was obviously over, all that they could offer me was a new iPod touch, at a reduced price of $160. My brother accepted there offer to pay for an 'apparently' new iPod touch at the reduced price of $160. Since I never wrote down the specs, and the geek squad member switched in the back, it could be the same device. The touch is still lagging a bit, kinda like it was 2 months ago, before the problem became progressively worse. If the problem does get worse within the 3 month warranty period, we will be returning it, demanding a complete refund, and both me and my brother have sworn to never purchase an apple product again.

I am having the same issues since installing iOS 9.1. Touchscreen is unresponsive at times, apps are randomly launched, and it will register touches when I didn't even touch the screen. I've also noticed a grainy white line at the top of the screen at times. I've tried multiple hard resets, but then it stops working soon after. I finally did a restore, but problem returned after a few hours. What is going on? It worked fine until 9.1.

I went to the "Genius" Bar and the guy I spoke with wanted me to restore the phone

to factory settings and set up the phone as new. He thinks the issue is in the backup. I wasnt buying what he was selling. I stumbled onto a very temporary solution though.

Anytime the touchscreen freezes up, bump the phone against a hard surface. The touchscreen will immediately start working after that. Not sure why that is but it works.
