ios 9.0.2 update -> Now touchscreen problems!

I updated my iPhone 5s 64g to iOS 9.0.2 from 9.0.1 last night over wifi, immediately the phone started misregistering my finger press and touch locations. The screen now intermittently opens apps, fails to allow the keyboard to be used correctly, will register touches when I am not even touching the phone. I had the phone in a lifeproof case (nuud) with screen protector (yes this is how it's supposed to be done!) - after the errors began I tried removing the case, removing the screen protector, and hard resetting the phone - this is NOT a hardware issue!

Hard resetting the iphone will sometimes clear the issue for a few minutes, then it begins again sporadically and intermittently - yet often enough that it is a huge headache to deal with. I can now pretty much only reliably use my phone through siri, and only then if I can get the phone to unlock from a hard reset! I spoke to apple support via chat, they recommended that I backup to icloud and restore the phone as "new iphone" and then only to restore data from the icloud backup. I made an appointment with my local "genius" bar (ugh do I hate saying that) though since this device is now outside of the 1 year warranty & applecare, And even though the update caused the error they will likely only replace the device with a replica for $269...

SUPER FRUSTRATED AT YOU APPLE!!! Give us a way to roll back these failed updates!!!

Update: When the iphone is plugged in to my macbook pro the touchscreen problems completely go away! possible emergency stop-gap solution... may as well tape my iphone to my macbook and walk around with it boombox-style. That's true apple swag.

It really drives me crazy. I've got the same problem.

Since updating iOS 9.0.2 (and iOS 9.1 beta 5. Actually, I have done everything I could do), when I turn off a screen and on the screen after 5 minutes, my touchscreen is literally frozen. I couldn't do anything. I was pressing all over the screen, but there was nothing. Surprisingly, if I turn on the screen again instantly, it works. How irritating. And the most critical problem is that I couldn't even answer the phone, because the touchscreen was frozen! I am really looking forward to fixing this problem, Mr.Apple.

Lastly, sorry for that my english is off. I'm not a native speaker.

It's now been 3 weeks, and close to 10,000 views, and apple still hasn't fixed this problem. iPhones and iPod Touches are not inexpensive items, and touch capability is the most important feature on these devices, and their now there literally useless. My next device will definitely not be an Apple product, because the cook's apple has now become rotten to the core.

Bloody Same issue for me.. I heard a lot about quality of apple products and so I bought my first iphone (Iphone6) and first thing it showed is update to IOS 9.0.2 and its a complete bull ****.. and now I regret selling my note 4 and bought a Iphone6.

List of F**cing problems I faced.

  1. WIFI Connectivity Issues. (It doesn't open safari page as I have to login to a service provider page have to do this on laptop and then re-connect to wifi)
  2. Touch Screen Freezes Out (Have to lock the phone and unlock it again to bring back the screen to respond to touch)
  3. Touch goes on its own.(like some black magic happened to my phone)
  4. Opens apps on its own.
  5. Keyboard Types on its own(Specially it types "Y", "G" and "H" most of the times)
  6. Music seems a big mess.(I have to Keep mobile data on to even hear the songs which I had added to "Make available offline").
  7. A BIG REGRET for Paying APPLE a Huge MONEY to get this Bloody Useless Brick (Android is the king)

Going back to android

Yes Right...

Guys, Pls DO NOT upgrade to 9.1, it has more issues then 9.0.2. Touch screen is not just another issue for me...

I have already moved to Sony Xperia... I'm still receiving email alerts from this blog which I could turn off but thought to be helpful to people around here at least by testing on my piece of useless brick and share results... Ahhh wait, not completely useless.... at least its useful for testing now 😀 LOL

Ok guys I took it to the Apple store and the technician swapped out a new phone for me.

He said Apple has been getting these issues but STILL don't know what is causing it or how to fix it.

They don't know if it is just certain devices that are faulty or if it is the software.

I was barely able to get a new one at no charge since I had my 1 year warranty.

I was actually 1 day over but he was nice enough to give me a new one.

If you are out of warranty it will cost you $329 dollars to switch to a new phone..

So your best bet is to take it to an Apple technician and get a new phone.

After restoring from a backup my phone was back to normal as before with no touchscreen error.

Unfortunately most of us are not still under warranty. I know that saying this will probably get my post removed, for 'speculation', but why would an apple tech say that this problem 'could' only be isolated to certain devices? Unless every apple device sold, 'is not' manufactured the same way, and wt the same exact hardware, they should all be operating the same way. Perhaps people wt similar touch problems have a software installed, purchased at the app store, that is causing the problem. No matter what the reason, it is Apples bad. The problem isn't a small one either, and w/o touch capability, our devices are useless. We purchased our devices, and expect them to operate. If Apple expects us to continue being customers, a small refund is in order, once and if the problem is resolved. A couple of free song, or app downloads, won't be enough reimbursement, for literally weeks of lack of device use, but it's a start. Again I know that this forum will most likely remove this post, but I needed to get this off my chest.

***Update***

SO! I am still having the touchscreen problem, having taken every step short of swapping out my iPhone (out of warranty so at my expense). I tested iOs 9.1beta and the issue still remained, I then updated to iOS 9.1 (build 13B143) and the issue of random touches still remains.

The only temporary workaround I have at the moment is by powering the screen off (when the device is not charging) - waiting for at Least 5 seconds - then powering the screen back on. Cycling the screen like this seems to give me around 8-15 accurate screen presses before it goes wonky and has to be cycled again.

Important!!

As the phone will open apps and press buttons at random while the issue is active, save yourself from errant messages, likes, phone calls, and apps opening at random by moving as many apps as possible to the second screen

Other

My latest backup to a macbook turned out to be in July 2014 so was essentially useless to me to try to restore from for my business utilization of the phone. iCloud backups only restore to the latest software on the phone or downloadable from iTunes (also 9.1). Reading other threads, if you are under warranty coverage swap your phone out ASAP at an apple store... if you are out of coverage it sounds like you'll either have to pay out of pocket for an identical replacement or wait for a corrective update.

The good news!

I was contacted by an apple support rep out of the blue today to discuss the problem (these threads are actually being perused and the problems worked on!?!) and hopefully will be speaking soon with an apple engineer directly about the problem. Less frustrated with Apple as a company since the personal contact, although my use of the iPhone is still as frustrating as ever.

I was having the same issues on my 6+ : a dead screen, random unwanted keyboard inputs, and inability to answer calls. I installed all the updates and nothing helped. I took my phone to the apple store and they took it in the back opened it up and told me it was a screen problem. They replaced the screen at no cost even though it was out of warranty.

I told them that the first time this issue occurred was around the time I installed IOS version 9.0

Wow this is good news, that Apple is following this forum and contacted you. My device seems to be having similar problems like you. Usually cycling it off, also works for me. Still for me, it's useally only about 5 - 8 presses before it acts wonky, but sometimes, it works great for ten minutes. For me the problem occurs most often, when I am entering or editing info into the calendar app. Also sometimes when I try to cycle it off, even the slide to power off won't register a touch. Also cycling the device off & on, several times in a short period of time, is a really big drain on the battery, so I hate having to do that.

Luckily my device, does not seem to be registering false touches, but thanks for the tip, about moving open apps to a second screen. I find that closing all open apps, except for the one I'm currently using , seems to increase the amount of time, I'll have before touch ability fails.

I will not be spending hundreds of dollars on an identical replacement, that's for sure, especially when the replacement will most likely also fail. Looks like some more time waiting for corrective update. 😕
