El capitan freeze during install

My 2013 MacBook pro has frozen during the install.

1. I downloaded from the app store and began the install process.

2. The computer rebooted for the next step of the install process

3. The white install bar is frozen at 90% Fans are running at top speed.

What should I do?

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5), iPhone 5s, MacBook Pro

You can try stopping the MBP with the power button. Once it is stop for 20 seconds or so power it back up again and see if that helps.

Denbee's instructions were great! I was able to troubleshoot the install on my MBP Early 2011 going from Mountain Lion to El Capitan. As other posters mentioned I did NOT have to try one kext file at a time. I simply copied them to the unsupported folder, re-started, installation succeeded, put them all back in, restarted, and it worked flawlessly. It saved me hours of hoping the hanged beach ball cursor and progress bar would move.

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro and it gets stuck at the very start of the install which is a bit different from most posts I've read. I've wiped the hard drive and did a clean install of Lion off a USB, that's all I had available. Download El Capitan and same issue, tiny progress on the install Apple logo screen but it just sits there for hours. I've tried safe mode, shift key after start up sound, but it just comes back to this screen. Any thoughts?

I have Lion on a USB and I am able to boot from that. Once I start the El Capitan install and it freezes, I have to reset the PRAM then recovery mode to delete the hard drive, then the USB Lion install Goes through. Resetting the PRAM has to be done or it won't work, for me anyway. My battery is completely dead, I'm thinking this may have something to do with it but I'm not sure. I found my Mevericks and Yosemite downloads in iTunes purchase history and am now attempting a Yosemite install however that enjoys hanging out at 20 minutes remaining for hours at a time. My hope is to get Yosemite running then try to upgrade. Thankfully I have another pro and and air so I'm not stuck without one while I work on this.

a) In my opinion, you got lucky.

B) on a desktop Mac, there are capacitors in the power supply that smooth over ripples and sags and spikes in the DC power. On a notebook computer, the battery does that job. While it is common to run a notebook computer without a battery while under repair, it is NOT recommended for daily use. Power fluctuations are conducted directly to the chips, and that may cause premature failure.
