El capitan freeze during install

Denbee, or anyone that has been successful, I'm a bit of a novice here. Can someone tell me exactly how to login to get to step #2 from the safe mode screen? There are options to Restore from Time Machine, Reinstall OS X Get Help Online and Disc Utility.

When you start your mac, just push the shift right after you hear the startup sound. Then your Mac OS will start in safe mode and you'll have access to the Finder. It shouldn't give you any of those options, rather start the system as usual but annoyingly slower than before 😝

I have a Mac mini, and I am updating from OSX Mountain Lion to OSX El Capitan. Everything went normally in the beginning. It shut down all my applications and told me it needed to restart my computer. Then I got the white screen with the Apple logo and the progress bar. It stalled at 30 minutes remaining and sometimes fluctuates back to 31. It has been this way for 24 hours. I am unable to boot in safe mode or recovery mode. Nothing happens. I have shut down and restarted several different times and it goes right back to the progress bar.

Doesnt work because I can't even get it to boot in safe mode, nor recovery mode.

Mine freezes up going into safe mode too. Any other advice?

If it can't boot into Safe Mode or Recovery mode, the stuff on your Disk (or the drive itself) is damaged.

One other possibility is a Memory problem, except on the Mac Pro with Xeon processor that features error-correcting memory.

I called but was told that since my MacBook Pro was not longer under warranty then there would be a charge for the service. But maybe it is worth it to try again.

If you have access to an Apple Store, your appointment for an evaluation at the Genius Bar is free, in warranty or out.

Any repairs you decide to have them perform are at flat rate, no surprises.

I can boot in Recovery Mode. But it seems like it is in Safe Mode that I need to be to fix things.

In recovery mode, you can do a Disk Utility ( Repair Disk [directory]). This may improve things enough to get to Safe Mode.

If it is freezing in safe mode that would tend to indicate a problem with the installation of El Capitan. Try reinstalling El Capitan again and see if that helps.

Actually I reboot from an external disk in order to edit the .kext files and it worked well.

NOTE that I put again all the .kext back to the Extension folder once El Capitan reboot regularly the first time and then the computer started well again despite all the extensions were back in the same folder. Actually I think is not necessary to test one by one all the .kext files.

If you do not have an external bootable disk ask a friend that have it: reboot from the external disk holding the [option] key and choose the external disk as booting system. Once rebooted you will be able access and open your internal HD and perform all the mods suggested by Denbee. Then just shoot down your computer, unplug the external disk and restart: if the problem is the .kxet extensions it should boot normally (note that the first time it takes some extra time).
