EPSON Scan software being put to sleep?

I have the latest EPSON Scan software (3.9.4.0EN) which according to Epson is tested for El Capitan. It has always acted a little weird – failing to notice clicks sometimes unless I Cmd-Tab to the app first, for example – but under El Capitan it is exhibiting some very annoying behaviour.

I run the preview scan and select multiple frames for full scan (I'm doing 35mm negatives) and it proceeds to scan the first frame. Then, sometimes, it pauses after saving that frame. To get it going again I usually have to click on its progress window (anywhere) and it will instantly begin scanning the next frame. One time the pointer was already over the window and I just moved the mouse slightly and that woke it up after a pause of several minutes.

At one point I quit it and relaunched and it could not see the scanner at all. A power cycle on the scanner did nothing and in the end the only thing that got it to work was launching VueScan and doing a test scan before quitting that and trying EPSON Scan again.

I could put up with most of the oddities but I often leave it to scan 6 frames which takes around 10 minutes only now I will have to stay with it to keep prompting it onto each frame.

The scanner is connected to an OWC Thunderbolt 2 hub and both VueScan and Image Capture can see it first time every time.

Is this some power saving feature causing the software to sleep while it's "not in use" (i.e. not getting user input)?

I have the same issue when scanning negatives with my MacBook Pro (OSX 10.11, El Capitan) and Epson Perfection V550 Photo scanner. I'm using the latest software for OSX 10.11 which is Epson scan 3.9.4.0NL. The scanner pauses after each scanned image and only continues when the application is brought to the front of the screen or when the mouse is moved when the application is at the front. Having to be around my MacBook to activate the scanner every few minutes is extremely annoying. 😠

I have reported this issue to Epson support and they first made some basic suggestions to resolve the issue (like resetting the settings of Epson Scan and reinstalling the software), but none of these suggestions fixed the problem. The support ticket is still open, so if they come up with a fix I will post it here.

Thanks. I just got my first response which was to run the uninstaller and reinstall, which I did. Still happens, although I've got one frame advance 'for free' while writing the email back to Epson. Huh – and now another one as I write this. Odd!

I've mentioned to them that your call has been marked as requiring a patch. I did note when it paused that I was able to Cmd-Tab to the app – which because it's weird did not even show the window – and then Cmd-Tab back to what I was doing and that was enough to kick it into life. So at least while sitting at the Mac there's a relatively quick option to get it moving.

So, so far in this first test after reinstall, I've got every second frame for free. And now, the next one waits for a Cmd-Tab. Yup! Works a treat. Sorry for the 'semi-real time" nature of this post!

I received an update from Epson Australia a few days ago.

Our engineers are developing a fix for this issue which should be available in the next couple of months.

The updated Epson Scan will be available using the Epson Software Updater program or from our website.

In the meantime you will have to use the countermeasure of moving the mouse to get the scan to start/continue.

Sounds like a plan.

Hi,

Just purchased the V600 and immediately ran into this issue.. I'm on a MBP running El Capitan etc..

I installed one of those simple mouse clicker programs and early tests seem to suggest this does the trick. I got the "Mouse Clicker" off of the App Store. (Unfortunately it cost a bit, but I was in no mood to look further..). Basically lets you set how often and how many times the mouse button should be clicked each "turn". I set mine to once every 10 seconds.

I think this only works if I have the EPSON Scan app open, with the mouse pointer inside the app window though..so this might not be the ticket for everyone.

Still have issues if I am doing something else on the MBP, then I have to "jump" back to the Scan app to kick it back to life again.

Annoying..but perhaps this is a work around for some.

Let me just say I have no affiliation with the software I mention, it is the one I tried and it works for me.

This is absolutely killing me right now. I just bought this scanner specifically to scan in about 2,000 slides before Christmas for a big family gift. I have to click on the EPSON Scan application and wiggle my curser around for Every Single Slide. Help! I'm guessing I need to be posting this in an Epson message board vs. this one, but these thread here was the only page on the internet that had information about this problem. Thanks for helping me out.

PS. While typing this, I had to click on the EPSON Scan application and move around my curser four separate times. I've got a long, miserable few weeks in my future.
