EPSON Scan software being put to sleep?

I have the latest EPSON Scan software (3.9.4.0EN) which according to Epson is tested for El Capitan. It has always acted a little weird – failing to notice clicks sometimes unless I Cmd-Tab to the app first, for example – but under El Capitan it is exhibiting some very annoying behaviour.

I run the preview scan and select multiple frames for full scan (I'm doing 35mm negatives) and it proceeds to scan the first frame. Then, sometimes, it pauses after saving that frame. To get it going again I usually have to click on its progress window (anywhere) and it will instantly begin scanning the next frame. One time the pointer was already over the window and I just moved the mouse slightly and that woke it up after a pause of several minutes.

At one point I quit it and relaunched and it could not see the scanner at all. A power cycle on the scanner did nothing and in the end the only thing that got it to work was launching VueScan and doing a test scan before quitting that and trying EPSON Scan again.

I could put up with most of the oddities but I often leave it to scan 6 frames which takes around 10 minutes only now I will have to stay with it to keep prompting it onto each frame.

The scanner is connected to an OWC Thunderbolt 2 hub and both VueScan and Image Capture can see it first time every time.

Is this some power saving feature causing the software to sleep while it's "not in use" (i.e. not getting user input)?

Update -

I completely uninstalled the full Epson scan programme and everything associated with it. I then reinstalled the programme and up to date utilities from the Epson USA page and there now appears to be a marked improvement. I have just scanned three rolls of 35mm film with no issues and no stalling by the programme, I will run more tests tomorrow with Medium and Large Format negatives.

To recap, I am running the Epson V700 with a Mid 2017 iMac with IOS Sierra. Read my previous reply to see the issues I was having.

Thanks to everyone here for their input.

This is absolutely killing me right now. I just bought this scanner specifically to scan in about 2,000 slides before Christmas for a big family gift. I have to click on the EPSON Scan application and wiggle my curser around for Every Single Slide. Help! I'm guessing I need to be posting this in an Epson message board vs. this one, but these thread here was the only page on the internet that had information about this problem. Thanks for helping me out.

PS. While typing this, I had to click on the EPSON Scan application and move around my curser four separate times. I've got a long, miserable few weeks in my future.

This does indeed appear to solve the problem! Woo!

I see what you mean about the link not working. It highlights on the page here but doesn't activate when clicked. Conversely, when I went to the downloads section for either the V500 or my V370 I could not see the download, but then I was looking at the New Zealand site. What I did manage was to copy the link off the page here and post it into the address bar and I got the DMG file from a page that states "Epson America, Inc" in the title.

In any case, I ran some scans last night and it was definitely pausing on every frame, but after installing this package it is now advancing itself whether Epson Scan is the current app or not and whether I touch the mouse or not!

Another confirmed fix for a V550 attached to an iMac running 10.11.1, using patch as described below, downloaded from https://www.epson.co.uk/gb/en/viewcon/corporatesite/products/mainunits/support/1 2443:

DRIVERS

Epson Scan Patch for OSX 10.11 (v1.0) 09-Dec-2015 1.18 MBs

  • Version: 1.0
  • Release Date: 09-Dec-2015
  • File Format: DMG
  • File Size: 1.18 MBs

Vast improvement in scan speed; long pauses have disappeared. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!

Now... do I upgrade to El Capitan 10.11.2 and risk breaking things again 🙂

The epson17357 Common Updater 1.0.0 seems to have resolved my issue as well (having to move the mouse pointer before a preview or full scan would start). That's one down. But I see another problem that I am wonder if anyone else is experiencing. Once a scan is complete, the EPSON Scan utility shuts down... I have to relaunch it every time I want to do a successive scan.

I have been a Canon LIDE user for years, and have rather liked their MP Navigator (or at least, have become used to it). I decided to look at Epson when Canon decided it was not going to fix/patch El Cap issues. But it does seem odd to me that a scan utility would just shut itself off as the Epson utility is doing.

I've got a Macbook Pro running El Capitan 10.11.2 and an Epson Perfection 750 Pro Scanner. The idling during multiple scans after I installed El Capitan was really driving me crazy. I'm happy to say that installing the Epson Scan Common Updater v1.00 in the Drivers and Downloads section for the scanner on the Epson website solved this problem.
