EPSON Scan software being put to sleep?

I have the latest EPSON Scan software (3.9.4.0EN) which according to Epson is tested for El Capitan. It has always acted a little weird – failing to notice clicks sometimes unless I Cmd-Tab to the app first, for example – but under El Capitan it is exhibiting some very annoying behaviour.

I run the preview scan and select multiple frames for full scan (I'm doing 35mm negatives) and it proceeds to scan the first frame. Then, sometimes, it pauses after saving that frame. To get it going again I usually have to click on its progress window (anywhere) and it will instantly begin scanning the next frame. One time the pointer was already over the window and I just moved the mouse slightly and that woke it up after a pause of several minutes.

At one point I quit it and relaunched and it could not see the scanner at all. A power cycle on the scanner did nothing and in the end the only thing that got it to work was launching VueScan and doing a test scan before quitting that and trying EPSON Scan again.

I could put up with most of the oddities but I often leave it to scan 6 frames which takes around 10 minutes only now I will have to stay with it to keep prompting it onto each frame.

The scanner is connected to an OWC Thunderbolt 2 hub and both VueScan and Image Capture can see it first time every time.

Is this some power saving feature causing the software to sleep while it's "not in use" (i.e. not getting user input)?

Seems like this actually solved the problem. Finally it scans in the background and doesn't go to sleep if you leave computer for a while (mouse doesn't need to be moved). So clean everything out, install the EPSON Scan Utility version that Epson suggests for your OS, then install this updater:

Hi Zkarj and Cfrombth,

Fox27 here. I am getting the EXACT same behaviour with my Epson V550 scanner. Everything was fine under Mac OS Yosemite, but it's gone absolutely stupid with El Capitan. Its driving me nuts - before I could put a job on and walk away, now I have to sit in front of the Mac and prompt the scanner when it drops silent and 'goes to sleep' - it really is a massive problem and needs and urgent fix. I can't believe that Epson and Apple can be happy with with situation - it is totally unacceptable given the job and tasks that scanner is designed for.

Have you found a solution?

Cheers

Fox!

Thanks Esquared, I had posted my question prior to seeing the replies and solution provided. I failed to note the 'see all replies' tab at the bottom of the page, the forum format has changed a lot since last time I used it. Anyway, I really doubt that I would have found the Epson patch had it not been for the link given by the contributors here, it doesn't seem obvious to me when trawling the Epson website.

On a a side note, I'm loving my Epson V550 scanner, IMHO it's an amazing device for such a modest cost I reckon.

I have the Epson V550 running under Mac OS Sierra 10.12 and all works fine but in common with many other folk it will only scan single images and needs a constant "nudge" to continue. I read all the posts but can't find the common updater file in utilities and the patch downloads a string that says "Access Denied". So I am no further on.
