Green screen while opening high-res photo

Hi,

I am trying to open high resolution photos on my Macbook with the Preview. It shows the photo for a second and then green screen appears. After I try to zoom it once again shows a photo and then green screen appears again.

What is this and how can I solve this issue?

I am working on Macbook pro 13' Retina Late 2013, 2,6 GHz Core i5 Intel Iris graphics 8b DDR3 memory, OS X El Capitan v. 10.11

It still did this in 10.11.1 However I altered the size of the photo in preview and the green went away and the photo appeared. Seems to be a problem with large files
