Photo Preview is SICK (GREEN SCREEN) El Captain
Opening photos in preview causes them to come up green. This situation occurred right after I upgraded to El Capitan. Is anyone else having this problem?

You need to contact apple on this issue - it is a bug if it happens to you -- it may a problem Apple dropping one of the format types again.
For instance Iphoto09 required all photos be in RGB format while Iphoto 08 would accept them in black and white.
They do like to surprise us.
I have this as well and have reported to Apple who say they are working on it.
Wouldn't do any harm for someone else to report it as well.
Is it every one or just very high resolution/large file size photos?
There was a bug in Preview, I think going back to Yosemite, where it would crash with large files.
I think it is just large resolution files but only on Retina screens. Fails on my Macbook Pro with retina screen but fine on Macbook Air without.
iPhone photos on Retina screen are OK but Canon EOS 6 jpg's fail raw are fine.
I have seen the crashing on a non-retina display. But, I haven't tried opening a really large file since upgrading to El Capitan.
Same problem here after upgrading to 10.11.
Large JPEGs become green when opening with "preview".
Found it to be OK in Safe Mode but see here also for a workaround that works after a fashion.
It is not a file type problem. I have two identical macbook pros. One has the "green screen photos in preview" problem and the other does not. So there has to be some other factor that combined with the os x update to cause this. I have checked all the preview settings and they are identical.
As for the "fix" posted in other threads . . . on the one that "goes green" changing the image scaling to "size on screen" allows photos to open, but zooming got green again. On the "good mac" the "1 to 1" setting works just fine.

The internal boards on your mac-books could be different - unless you purchased them at the exact same time.
For Instance - although the big Mac pro desktop looks the same for a number of years - its more of a box thing and apparently the internals vary.
I have the same problem, (Macbook Pro 13" mid 2014) but it is not consistant with all jpg's and I get green/grey screens with images of varying sizes. Some jpg's open with green screen and others with grey screen. Some open just fine. I have 300KB images that open with green screen and 18.5 MB images that open the image with no problem. All images were taken with the same camera (Nikon D750) I have scoured the meta data for a clue. Nothing. I have been pulling my hair out looking for the thread that connects those that won't open, but cannot find it.
I also tried the suggestion from another forum of going to preview preferences Image--> and changing to: "Size on screen equals size on printout", but that didn't solve the problem for me. Nothing changed.
I called Apple and got to level II support. I sent them examples of jpg images that opened with green screen and those that opened without a problem. They followed up with me today with this message: " Green/grey screens when looking at jpg's in "Preview" is a known issue that we are working on. At this time there is no remedy. Please watch for updates."
So, that's all they wrote. Hopefully the changing stuff in "preferences" will work better for you than me. It seems to work for some.
I have other bugs/annoyances too. I so wished I hadn't upgraded.

Out of curiosity did they have you compare the Color Profiles? Right click - get info on the picture.
There may be a variation on that that is causing the issue -

Additionally did they have you check the color sync utility -- to see if the Color Profile of your pictures matches a profile in the list.
Apparently the profiles can get corrupted or vanish take your pick.
For instance although I have a "Grey" profile under Guttenprint -- IPHOTO09 will not load a Grey scale(B&W) picture - but Preview opens it.😕
Thanks for the suggestions. My profiles are correct and the same across the board. I received another call from Apple care Level II yesterday to confirm that they have identified this "green/grey" preview issue as an official "bug" and that it should be fixed in the next update--which I hope is very soon. For a photographer, this is mucho annoying. Absurd, actually.
Thank you for the update, BostonHarbor 🙂
I totally agree as a Photographer this is very annoying. I haven't taken the risk to update my other Mac Computers because of this glitch. I only upgraded my Mac Book PRO with Retina and it seems from other posts that I have read that this glitch is popping up with Mac's with Retina Display. So, it is something on their end that they need to fix. I tried changing the color profile's and that didn't not change anything.
I will be waiting patiently for the next update before I update my other Mac's computers.
I agree with you LuLu. I am also not upgrading my iMac even though it doesn't have a retina display. The new features do not in any way outweigh this ridiculous bug (and the changes to permissions to "read only" on my external drives. Arrghhhh) . I'll post here is I hear anything else. It wouldn't hurt if everyone with this issue report it to Apple Care. Maybe with more users complaining, it will get higher up the "bug list"
