Battery status indicator for wireless keyboard - El Capitan

Did some quick searches here at Google/DDG. Could not find anything.

So along with the "secure empty trash" option, it appears that the wireless keyboard battery status is missing too? Has anyone else noticed that and/or have a fix?

I can still see the Magic Mouse battery status.

The wireless keyboard battery status is greyed (grayed) out and always shows 100 per cent...

Mine is greyed out too and always has been. That is OK. The keyboard uses much less battery power, I have noticed - Macs are mouse-centric and mice use a lot of power versus a keyboard anyway. So I go through mouse batteries quickly. But not so much the keyboard. It will stay at 100% for quite some time. It only recently started a decline on the set of batteries I put in some time ago. I suspect your indicator via the Bluetooth symbol is fine - it sounds like it is working like mine at any rate.

10.11.2 fixes the battery problem I first noted - the keyboard battery status indicator is back in the System Preferences.

It's still nice to know how much power is left.

I need to charge my spare batteries before my keyboard completely loses power. I don't do it ahead of time anymore because they lose power quickly while sitting, so when I put 'em in they're already down to 60%.

As soon as I see a notification that my keyboard power is very low, I plug in my charger and juice up the spares.

That takes about half a day and my keyboard always lasts that long.

I use my keyboard a lot and have to swap batteries every week.

I called AppleCare Support yesterday about this issue and another, and hope to have an answer sometime this week.

I expect the usual "you need to reinstall the OS," even though it's been this way since day one of a fresh install on a new computer.

That seems to be the standard recommendation for almost any issue.

Much easier to suggest the extreme measure than to actually diagnose the real problem, right Apple? 👿

Not quite sure what you mean - my keyboard battery power level (through the Bluetooth menu option) was 58% last week; this morning when I checked it, it is 48%. Seems like a lot of warning.

I typically use the keyboard maybe half and half with the mouse. Obviously, I am using the keyboard almost exclusively now. Even when I was writing SW it was probably half-and-half since I had to move the cursor around a lot to edit or write. Just SWAGs on my part.

The mouse has a signal processing chip in it - I believe it operates at something like 1200 hz to interpret the laser returns. It does scene correlation to determine which way the mouse moved. So compared to a key tap (which sends a digital word), the mouse is going to consume a lot of power even if sitting still. It does often go to sleep but that really only helps a little

So I am amazed that you swap your keyboard batteries out each week. But so be it. I do my mouse batteries probably once a month if the batteries are good to begin with and the keyboard maybe every other month. I wait until they get down to the warning level though - maybe you do yours sooner than that.

Cheers.

It's only a lot of warning if there's a functioning indicator to give you that warning.

But if we all had one of those this discussion wouldn't exist now, would it?

I'm not sure what your message was meant to convey, it doesn't add anything to the discussion as far as I can tell.

As I said, I use my keyboard (and mouse) a lot - usually more than 12 hours a day, so of course mine will need its batteries changed more often.

The mouse is rechargeable and needs it daily, but it has its own power indicator.

So did you just reply to argue about how frequently my batteries should need changing?

I don't see any indication here that you've "bothered" anyone.

In fact I only see one brief reply to you except for mine on 1-17 which I just noticed was mistakenly posted as a reply to you.

You do realize that my reply yesterday wasn't to you, but to chuckefus?

The arrangement of posts here can be a bit confusing, gotta look for who it's responding to - "in response to chuckefus, "in response to terence169" etc.

It seems no one has an answer for you if none of the suggestions helped.

Didn't work for me either, I'm still waiting to here back from Apple - I sent screenshots to go along with my AppleCare support issue.

This issue and a Console issue have plagued my computer since it was new a month ago, so it's not something I caused.

It's kinda hit and miss here, sometimes you get lucky and someone can help, other times there may be 10 pages of replies and a solution still hasn't been found.

Same goes for Applecare Support - sometimes you get a rep who knows what they're talking about, often you get one who doesn't.

I won't even waste my time talking to the junior reps who answer the phones anymore - I ask for a Senior Advisor and sometimes even then I know more than they do. I usually ask how long they've been a S.A, because ones that were just promoted from Junior Advisor aren't much better than the ones still answering the phones.
