iTunes 12.3 with el Capitan not responding

I just installed OS X El Capitan on my iMac and my iTunes (12.3) has not been working since. When iTunes is open, I can't click on anything. I know it's not a mouse problem, because the mouse works with any other application or program.

appzapped itunes with great trepidation. installed itunes12.3 I had downloaded. All started and worked! Lost 3 months of music inputs I had to redo but it works. When started a second time, some of the menu choices are labelled wrong, but everything is where it was and still works. Still awaiting a reasonf for 12.3.1's problem, and even more eagerly awaiting its update/correction.

I am having this same problem - every time I click on anything in iTunes 12.3.1.23 on El Capitan all I get is a spinning beach ball. I can't do anything. EVERYTHING ELSE on my computer works perfectly. This is the worst piece of computer software I have ever experienced in 30 years of using both Apple & Windows systems. As there appears to be no fix in sight and no way to reinstall the previous version of iTunes, I am seriously considering never buying any Apple product in the future as it appears my iTunes purchases are now all useless.

You can revert. This is from earlier in this thread and in other threads:

Here's what I've posted before:

This is from other people. Worked for me, anyway.

Download 12.3:

http://www.v3.co.uk/v3-uk/download-review/1957301/apple-itunes-for-mac-1110

Then:

  1. Open the Terminal
  2. Run "sudo rm -r /Applications/iTunes.app"
  3. Re-install iTunes

Also, be aware that when it asks for your password, the password won't be visible as you type it. After you type password, hit enter and iTunes should be deleted.

After I reinstalled 12.3.0.44, things worked as before. Note: I had to restart to my iMac before the version number in Finder matched the actual version number found by looking at "About iTunes" in the menu. Also, I then ran repair disk permissions via OnyX. It showed some problems w/ iTunes permissions, but those may or may not have been relevant to any of this problem.

Good luck and hope this helps.

The deleting/reinstalling trick worked for me, too.

SO MANY PEOPLE are having this problem (under Yosemite and El Capitan) - but not EVERYONE.

So what's the real problem that needs to be fixed (by Apple)? Is the spinning beachball/crashing due to the size of the library? Is it because my library is stored on an external hard drive? Why do some people running the newest iTunes not have this problem?

Who knows what the real issue is. From comments, seems more prevalent w/ people w/ iTunes libraries created near the beginning.

While it may well be irrelevant, I noted elsewhere in these threads that if you create a new library, the subfolder iTunes Music is now replaced w/ iTunes Media. Might be a coincidence, but I wish someone who was conversant w/ such issues could offer some info. and how/if such a name change could create the problems we've experienced.

For everyone afraid to use the terminal just use appzapper as I mentioned in an earlier thread. Download appzapper then zap itunes 12.3.1. Download itunes 12.3, install and your itunes will work again. Make sure you block the itunes update by going to the app store and right clicking itunes 12.3.1 and then hide it. Also block itunes from updating within itunes itself. These steps will stop itunes from automatically updating.

I've got to agree with everything in the above comment from @ "pattiharrington". I've got exactly the same issues.

I did all the terminal sudo and re-install from earlier version of iTunes - nada, zip, zilch, zero.

Does no one from Apple Tech Support actually read, and/or take any notice of the posts here.

And it's not just iTunes - the whole shebang is sluggish. Oh, yeah they gave us a redesigned spinning ball to keep us amused while some one comes up with a fix. Well I, for one, am not amused - I've just invested in a Retina 5K iMac with 32GB RAM and first thing it wanted to do when plugged in was upgrade the OS from Yosemite to El Capitan, with no way back, and which has left it running like a sloth. I now have a very expensive, but elegant paperweight! I have been using Apple equipment since the Mac Plus, but this, it seems is about has bad as it gets.

If I had really wanted a useless trinket, maybe I should have simply bought an iPhone and a watch!

Ok, I have tried everything that has been discussed here and NOTHING is working, iTunes still get the stupid rainbow beach ball and will not respond, so I have to Force Quit... EVERYTHING was FINE til I upgraded to El Capitan or I would like to call it El CRAPitan....come on APPLE FIX ITUNES!!!!

I have NOT been able to use my iTunes since I upgraded and thats been about 2 weeks now... what the ****?? Somebody at Apple needs to do SOMETHING. FIX iTUNES!!!!!!!

I have had the same issue since upgrade to el capitan, but if open a new administrator account on your mac you should be able to use itunes store and app store. Not much comfort in this. Also sometimes if you safe boot you might be able to log in to your account. Whatever the issue is Apple is not acknowledging there are issues. Seems like Tim Cook does not believe their are major issues.

same story:

Tunes doesn't work at all - spinning beach ball, no menu choices available, can't play any music, can't sync iPhone or iPad.

I have to force quit iTunes. I rebooted, repaired permissions, reinstalled iTunes — nothing works!!!

Can anyone help? Apple doesn't seem to do anything — many people had similar complaints since early october!

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Early 2013), OS X 10.11.1, iTunes 12.3.1.23.
