Quicktime Plug-In Missing in Safari 9/El Capitan

After upgrading to OS X 10.11 & Safari 9, I noticed that a video I uploaded to my website (created by iWeb, in case that's relevant) can no longer be viewed on my computer. I get the "missing plug-in" display:

Clicking on it provides the following pop-up window:

Selecting "More Info..." takes me to http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/ and the super-useful information that Quicktime is built into OS X:

But there's no link to download the plug-in. (The page seems rather out of date, as Software Update hasn't been part of OS X since the days of Snow Leopard (10.6), right? App Store took its place in the Apple menu.

So does anyone know how to download the Quicktime Plug-In? I've already checked Help -> Installed Plug-ins and verified that Quicktime isn't listed there.

Don't know if this will help but I just did a clean install of El capitan and looking in /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ there was a folder there marked disabled plugins and in it was quicktime plugin. So maybe it will be on your computer like that too.

Just take the plugin out of the disabled folder into the "Internet Plug-Ins" folder.

I had this problem on my MacBook Pro that I've been using for years and moving the Quicktime files out from Disabled Plug-Ins worked for me. I assumed the problem had something to do with the various system upgrades, video codecs, and/or software I had installed onto that computer over the years. Just this week I got a brand new iMac and got the "Missing Plug-in" in Safari, and noted the 2 Quicktime files in the Disabled Plug-Ins folder. So, now I know that this problem has nothing to do with system upgrades, video codec installations, and/or other software. For whatever reason, by default the Quicktime plug-ins are disabled in Safari. I have no idea why, but am thankful for this thread and the solution it presents.

Hi all, thnx for sharing the issue with iWeb posting of QT pug in.

I've a question though ...

although this step solve on viewing the QT ( .mov) on m desktop does that means

all the viewers open our site have to take this step.

Simply, how do we know the rest of the viewers can have ease in viewing without the " missing plug-in" issue.

Should the file be converted to other formats or there's iWEB latest updated version can sole this "coding' auto magically?

Pls. see attached as advised by Apple.

Thanks all in advance.

I'm glad Apple has posted an announcement to web developers telling them how to update their websites, however how many web developers check Apple's discussion boards for suggestions on how to ensure their legacy websites are usable to Safari users? The websites I and my wife were having troubles with were online "lectures" for a nutrition class at a local community college. The nutrition instructors that made these sites are not web developers. Apple should make sure they are doing their best to keep compatibility with older sites too. It simply looks bad for Apple when there is a "Missing Plug-In" dialog for a Quicktime movie in Safari on a brand-new iMac. It is only made worse by the fact that when one clicks the dialog and tries to install the plugin, the user is taken to Apple's Quicktime website that goes on to say how Quicktime is included in OS X. It would make a lot more sense to link to a page that either fixes the issue for the user and/or states what changes need to be made to the website to update it.

Hello guys

I use the click to plugin- safari extension, which I love. It gives me the functionality to view a html5 video in the Quicktime player.

I use this functionality a lot. I am using El Capitan now, which disabled the quicktime webplugin. I normally need to select the quicktime webplugin in the safari webplugin settings to run in unsafe mode for the functionality to work. I tried the fix mentioned, moving the plugin back into internet plugins, but it still doesn't register in the settings list with plugins. Could some one help me out...?

I found the both files in the disabled folder and moved them to the Plugin folder. Now I can see the plugin in Safari, but this is QuickTime Plug-in 7.7.3 and not 7.6.6 which I had installed (QuickTimePlayer7.6.6_SnowLeopard.dmg from Apple).

So I removed the plugin and reinstalled QT 7.6.6 but the Plugin didn't come back at all.

How can I get the 7.6.6 Plugin now?

Thanks

frank

I found this other post:

Re: Midi plug-in for OS 10.8.5?

where it is told, that the plugin for 7.6 is not that easy to install, I need it from an old Mac or could extract it from some downloads, but then I need to create some this and that to make it work. So I guess I keep it like it is and will play midi files just through download and QT 7.6 and not directly with plugin in the browser. Anyway.
