wireless Apple keyboard stalls requires restart

Since update, the keyboard/typing occasionally stalls and shows me alternate letter options, and there is a kind of fluttering key sound, like someone is pressing my keys. The only fix is to restart. Happened in Preview and in Firefox and in LibreOffice. Can't figure out a cause, but it works for a day, then starts up again. I restart because I fear a kernel panic (paranoid).

I have exactly this same problem. Seems to only happen sometimes after iMac (2015 5K) has been asleep.. comes back and I can enter password OK and everything looks normal until you start typing. Never had a problem with Yosemite - only El Capitan.

I then experience

  • excessive keyboard lag where keypresses dont appear for ages, if at all
  • lots of 'binging' - as if you've just held lots of keys down

ALready been onto apple support once - not much use 😟

I tried killing off all apps and extensions - no change. Disconnecting the keyboard via bluetooth doesnt help either.

Only a reboot fixes it. I am running AVG anti-virus so I'll try to disable that and see if it makes a difference

This has worked for three days:

In the developers forum they mention that slecting "preventing the computer from sleeping automatically when display is off" will temporally stops the issue. Of course that is because the Mac is never going to sleep in the first place.

Surprised there isn't more people affected? Wonder it it isolated to certain hardware only? BTW - I have a late 2015 15" MacBook Pro.

I've got a 2014 5K 27" iMac.

Since over-installing El Capitan again I've only had a keyboard 'spasm' once after wakeup. On that occasion I just powered cycled the keyboard and it got better without needing a reboot.

I previously had "magicprefs" installed for the magic mouse but removed that prior to OS re-install. Dunno whether that was in any way related.

I have not had the problem over the past several days. The only thing I have done during this period was remove all Bluetooth devices and re-paired them all. I did this because I read a theory on the developers forum that the Magic Trackpad was causing interference in one user's case. Figured it couldn't hurt. Also replaced the batteries in my keyboard as they were getting low.

You might try just powering the keyboard off and on. That works for me and avoids a complete restart. I have unpaired, turned off and put away my wireless track pad and am using just my mouse for now. So far, I haven't had the issue for over 2 days after doing that. Some people think that the trackpad is creating the interference. Either way, it's a bug that needs to be corrected!

Now I am virtually certain that my Magic Trackpad is the culprit in this. I unpaired it, powered it down and put it away and continued just using my Magic Mouse. After 5 days of flawless use of my bluetooth keyboard, I decided to try the trackpad again. I repaired it and used it. After the next sleep, the keyboard was back to its stalling. It seems clear to me that, in making OS X 10.11 friendly to the new Magic Trackpad 2, something relating to the original Magic Trackpad was fouled up. I'm wondering how many others who have had this keyboard issue are also using a bluetooth Magic Trackpad.

Had same issue develop over last week which made login impossible until switching off/on keyboard, came across this

I followed the guide towards the end which talks about "Remove All Devices" and "Reset the Bluetooth Module" from the "Debug" section in the "Bluetooth in Menu Bar". Note you will require either a USB Mouse or Keyboard to make it easy, but you can carry out the two stages one at a time rebooting in-between by using the shut off button.
