Ever since I updated itunes my ipod classic 160gb no longer syncs song or videos properly. Even when I break up the songs into smaller playlists sometime itunes will freeze on a song or video and either not respond or force me to restore my ipod. I've reinstalled itunes several times and formatted my ipod twice, is there any way to fix this syncing issue?

Gave it a couple of days trying, and noticed something. It might not be my iPod, iTunes will freeze playing songs without trying to sync the iPod or will select the song but not play it. My Norton security with backup was off and it still acted up. Any suggestions?
Yes, see Backup your iTunes for Windows library with SyncToy. Backup your data as soon as possible. Your source drive may well be failing. Unlike Windows Explorer which hangs up when it cannot read a file SyncToy will carry on with the next one. A subsequent run may pick up files that were skipped on the first pass, and won't try to copy files that have already been copied.

itunes is on my external drive and there is nothing wrong with the external drive. when I try to reinstall itunes it always says it needs to be repaired in installation.
Norton AV has certainly been implicated lately in some people's difficulties updating their iPods. However if iTunes is freezing during normal playback I'd be worried there were also problems elsewhere. Your internal and external drives have similar mechanisms to the iPod for managing bad sectors but there is no built in tool in Windows to monitor the status. Freezing may be a symptom that some of your data is no longer reading reliably. Is it the iTunes software installation that keeps showing for repair, or the library database? It says that just the iTunes installation needs repair when i redownload and start the installer. Also I looked at the link and I was wondering; the apple mobile device service is set to automatic start but the ipod service isn't should I try switching to automatic? Or should I just back up my music, videos, and podcasts and completely remove anything itunes related and then reinstall?
iPod service shows as manual here. I'm guessing iTunes starts it up when it runs. Yes. I would create/update your library backup, then remove all Apple components, reboot and reinstall.

Is there a way to back up the library properly, because when I go into iTunes it just saves the playlist information. Do I just have to select all the items and copy them on my external in folders?
Edit: Forgot to ask this; could I just copy them from where the files are in itunes media and keep the names and album art?

Reinstalled itunes and rebuilt my library, noticed that sometimes when adding videos or sonfs itunes will freeze. And it will do this with norton auto protect on or off, could it be my old installation of whitecap that had been part of the old itunes? Or some other third party software causing itunes to not respond?
I'm not familiar with Whitecap, but I wouldn't have thought it would be a problem. Visualizers should only get called during playback.

Decided to send in my iPod to a third party to have it repaired tomorrow; here's hoping the new hard drive fixes the syncing problem.😉
My iPod classic works now after I sent it in to have the drive replaced. Thank you for your help.
