App Store update icons grey/missing

For quite some time now, several of the App Store icons for updates are grey and missing. This is happening on both my iPad Air 2 and iPhone 6s. Scrolling through the list and back to the top usually reveals the missing icons. Not a big deal, but irritating since its been happening for months now. I'm not sure if this is an iOS bug or some sort of a server issue on Apple's side...

Anyone else seeing this?

An extract from the next reply I received....

"I’ve reviewed the screenshot and found that this issue has already been raised to our technical team. As a workaround while waiting for the investigation, customer’s are advised to delete the affected apps and redownload them back from the purchased page."

this suggests to me they believe the updates are not completing.

I wonder if the app store is still suffering a hangover. Whilst the issue seems resolved I did receive updates for MS office and excel overnight in UK (both correctly displaying the icons). They are large apps (350 mb approx. each) but even accounting for that the update was ridiculously slow. It took about 30 minutes just to complete one of them. That's about 2 m/bits second or 200/300 kilobytes a sec. My ISP gives me 55/60 m/bits a second and testing everything internet related (speedtests etc) confirmed everything else but the apple store was upto speed.
