El Capitan broke Adobe Bridge CS6/Photo downloader

As Photos makes no distinction between RAW and JPG (I shoot in both), I changed my workflow to first download all images from my camera to an external HD, using Adobe Bridge CS6/Photo downloader. I then separate the RAWs (CR2 files from my EOS 7D) from the JPGs and import the JPGs into Photos, just for quick viewing, etc. Serious postprocessing will be done starting from the RAWs using a RAW converter of choice. That can be Adobe Camera RAW, between Bridge and Photoshop CS6, Lightroom 6.1.1 (I have not yet updated to 6.2, because the import function has been revised), DxO OP10, or even Aperture 3.6 which still functions as designed.

Any way, great was my surprise when I quickly made a few shots yesterday, and wanted to upload (through Bridge CS6/Get Photos from Camera) so I could start working on them. My EOS 7D was not detected:

I tried my iPhone, but that was not detected either.

I know there are alternatives: Image Capture had no issue, neither was the use of a card reader in combination with the same Adobe Bridge a problem.

Or even the Canon software (EOS Utility). Or Lightroom 6.1.1, that also found my camera immediately.

But I wanted to know where the problem exactly was. As I had made a full clone before upgrading from Yosemite 10.10.5 to El Capitan 10.11, I could easily reboot in Yosemite, and try the same. Guess what: no problem at all:

I have reported this to Adobe (Photoshop Family), but wanted to report it here as well.

If any expert has any ideas, please shoot. I know of many alternatives, but it would be nicer if my camera was detected again.

Have always used Bridge (currently Bridge CC 6.1.1.10) to import from my EOS 1DS. It used to automatically launch photo downloader as soon as card was inserted into reader/ or iPhone plugged in. And imported images were tagged/copywritten and sent to an automatically created 'today' folder. Now it won't recognise the iPhone. So it's not just the CS6 crew are affected.

As a professional photographer, I too have been severely inconvenienced by the changes made to the handling of USB ports introduced with El Capitan (10.11.2) and Photos (1.3). I do not use Photos for any serious work so I want a way of switching off its default settings of treating all new USB connected cameras and camera cards as its property. It is not and the old permanent disabling of Photo Import must be reinstated. Photos is a gimmick with no practical use to professional users.

I use Adobe Creative Suite as my chosen photographic and video software, I have also lost the ability to use Adobe Bridge Photo Downloader (6.1.1.10) to detect and download my many images and video. Photo Downloader has always until now allowed me to manage bulk image imports to the folders I want and handle pre-processing on import as part of my workflow.

Apple must work quickly with Adobe to solve this major oversight and failure in El Capitan. This has been going on too long with no solution. Please get is sorted as you are not supporting your professional users.

Adobe has apparently missed the boat and really seems that they no longer

want to be Mac compatible.

The reason I am saying this is that my old Canon uploading software of a year ago still

recognizes my Powershot SX-40 and my Nikon View NX-i software recognizes my

new D3200 and has no issue uploading photos.

It looks like these guys follow OS X driver development standards and are not having issues

even with 10.11.2!!!!! Adobe thinks they know better how the driver should interface???

I think Adobe just doesn't care about Apple compatibility anymore (even though it was the

Mac platform that put Adobe Photoshop on the map. I had version 1.0 on a Mac LC!).

Thank you for expressing my own frustration with Apple's lowest common denominator consumer focus instead of the professional community as they used to. Dropping 6k and finding out Bridge no longer recognizes my camera is astounding. Apple seems to have lost it's way with watches and other gizmos instead of powerful computers for professionals. I've been an Apple user since early 90s and am hoping they don't give me a reason to give up and switch over. And I started with Adobe products back with Photoshop 2.1 in the 90s. Don't forget your loyal customers, Adobe and Apple! Fix this embarrassingly obvious oversight with Bridge.

I just came across something interesting that puts the ball in Adobe's court.

It seems that development teams at Adobe simply do not talk to each other.

On a whim, decided to download the Photoshop CC demo and Lightroom CC

(the $9.99 subscription includes both). What I found is that as with Bridge CS6.

Bridge CC does not recognize any cameras.

HOWEVER, Lightroom CC immediately recognized both my Canon SX-40 HS

and my Nikon D3200 and quite happily downloaded the files!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So, if one app is borked and another one works just fine, both from the same company,

who has the problem.

It seems at Adobe, groups just don't talk to or help each other!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You're absolutely right, and not only Lightroom 6 (your CC is just the "milk-the-user-every-month" version of the separately sold LR6 version) connects perfectly to my EOS 7D, but also the previous version of Lightroom (v.5.7) recognises the camera perfectly; and I am running El Capitan 10.11.2, as I write this post still the most recent version of Apple's OS. So it is indeed Adobe's Photo Downloader that fails, and that, therefore, should be updated. I'm quite sure that Adobe will fix this, but I'm afraid they'll only fix the CC version. In that case: consider yourself glad to be milked by Adobe for the rest of your computing years. I shall not take that route.

Please report what you have stated above here: http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family/topics/bridge-no-longer-detects-c anon-5d-cameras?utm_source=notification&…

If you read a little closer, just looking at the demo on a whim. Have made no commitments.

FWIW, this latest and greatest Photoshop, regardless of ball and chain license,

really does not add very much at all to CS6 for the uses I have for it.

However, I do seem to like Lightroom->Photoshop flow more than Bridge->Camera Raw->Photoshop

and Lightroom in general (once getting used to it somewhat). Since Lightroom is still available as

a perpetual license, It may still be on the table. It is equivalently priced to other management/raw processor

apps (been looking at several lately). For those in the same price range, it seems to me to be overall

better than the others in raw processing.

Then, next is to find a replacement to PS itself (Affinity Photo looks really good but still has issues with plugins).

I'm joining the crowd in anger over the lack of compatibility with Adobe Bridge and Apple OS. I've been using Photoshop and Bridge for years. I like that system and I do not want to move on to Apple's Photo app. I totally agree with Mr Cornwell that these two mega corporations need to get their acts together and fix this. I also bought CS6 suite to avoid the CC monthly milking. I hope that complaining here will make a difference but I do not have high hopes of that. I am not sure how to go about making a louder noise to get the attention of whomever makes these decisions. Who at the decision level looks at these posts???

Total frustration!!!!

I found a work around that allows Adobe Bridge downloader to work using Adobe CC & El Capitan (adobe do mention how to deal with it although perhaps not in plain EnglishI have a Canon 7D mk 11 ) I took the memory card out & put it in the card reader in my MBP the card showed as a device & I was able to download using Bridge no problem.(https://helpx.adobe.com/bridge/kb/bridge-and-el-capitan.html)

Photos was a pain since at first it was trying to download the pictures since it did recognise the camera the solution is to uncheck the box next to the device details

Dec 30, 2015 2:40 PM in response to franzleojames

Adobe Bridge does indeed recognise a memory card in a card reader. I may not have reported that here, but then I must have done so elsewhere.

And meanwhile, there is still no solution, just workarounds.
As regards unchecking the checkbox in Photos: that only works as longs as you have not reformatted the memory card.

As a matter of fact: I am not very fond of using a card reader for the Compact Flash card of my 7D. There have been reports of 'accidents' (damaged CF cards, either in the card reader, or -even worse- when reinserting the CF card into the camera body), and therefore, I will avoid manipulating the CF card as much as possible. It is said that SD cards are less vulnerable.

Dec 30, 2015 6:50 PM in response to lescornwell

I understand your point the memory cards are delicate & in all honesty I would prefer to use the usb 3 cable to download with.

One opposing argument a professional photographer friend of mine lost valuable shots when using cables he had not realised how low the camera battery was & it shutdown whilst downloading with as one can imagine catastrophic results I think he was able to retrieve the shots with software supplied with the flash card but he prefers to use a card reader & I imagine he has many flash cards but it is a good point you make about possible damage occurring with card particularly with the older compact flash cards .

I would certainly like a solution someone mentioned somewhere on the forum resetting the pram & SMC cures this anomaly I have not tried this yet.
