Preview crashes on El Capitan

Hi,

after upgrade to El Capitan Preview app crashes on my MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013) when I try to open a large photo. It shows green screen first and later just crashes. I also noticed that images look good with the quick preview (when press Space), but they are not with retina quality when opened in Preview app. Is there any fix of that issue?

Thanks,

Martin

Same thing here... Very frustrating indeed. It looks that each app using MacOs' pdf rendering engine crashes randomly. (this includes: preview, Mail, Safari, Skim, Texpad, etc).

I would like to add that this happens randomly. I can have one file crashing and then working just fine after killing the Preview App. Also it happens a lot that after opening many PDF files, the last one I open only shows blank pages (with the correct page count though). Then I know my preview (or skim or whatever) is getting tired and do a hard kill.

This is a very annoying problem! I read PDFs for a living!

For me, Preview crashes (hard) and sends a report anytime I attempt to modify a PDF. If I attempt to use the highlight tool or add pages to a PDF, Preview crashes and leaves the PDF unreadable. A few minutes later the PDF reappears with the changes I made. This problem occurs on my Mid 2009 MBP as well as my Late 2012 mini Server. Fortunately it does generate and send an error report when it occurs.

Running OS X 10.11.1 on 2014 MBA. This problem has crippled me in the past few weeks. I am a medical student and pretty much spend my entire day reading all my books as PDFs on preview and use it to make electronic flash cards. Anyone recommend other simple PDF viewing apps with split view? Got a feeling this isn't going to get fixed for a while or ever.

1) Rule out font issues.

How to use Font Book to validate fonts

1. Open Font Book in your Applications folder.

2. Select All Fonts.

3. Now click in the list of fonts and select all (Edit > Select All).

4. Under File in the Menu bar, select Validate Fonts.

5. Duplicate fonts will be marked with either the yellow badge or a black dot.

6. Select to remove or delete duplicates.*

7. Delete font caches

8. Restart your computer

* Step 6 – remove or delete duplicates is where the tricky part comes in. You can select to let Font Book disable or remove duplicates, but I’ve found that it removes the one you have not been using rather than selecting the best option. See Font Management in OS X, by Kurt Lang, for more info on fonts.

See Kurt Lang's directions here to remove font caches

2) Rule out issues in your User’s folder (home)

Testing in a new User will quickly tell you if the problem is system wide or if it's your User's folder that contains the problem.

Place any test files in Shared folder to testing in new User.

Your Hard Drive/Users/Shared

User uploaded file

After you log into the new test User, drag from Shared (it actually copies) your test files to the Desktop.

Remember to drag files back from Shared when you log back into your main User.

CREATE A NEW USER

Go to System Preferences --> Create a New User in Users & Groups.

Switch to the New User by logging out under the Apple in the Menu Bar.

Log into the new User.

You can skip logging in with an Apple ID. Hit continue then skip.

Only Apple apps will be in the Dock. Go to Applications to open any apps not showing in the Dock.

Do you still see the issue?

If yes, then the problem is with your base files.

If no, then the problem is in your User's folder.

If I open a JPG in Preview, and rename it, and then Adjust Size, it crashes, every single time. I can then reopen it and Adjust Size and it works.

If I don't rename it first, it doesn't crash.

Exactly what happens to me. Very time-consuming when you have a lot of images to adjust before posting on a blog. I'll try holding off on the renaming, though, to see how that works.

I'm having crashing problems also on Preview on all user accounts, with JPG and PNG files and possibly others. I'm using a late-model iMac with fusion drive. None of the suggested fixes seem to be working in this thread, so this is just a comment that the problem is widely spread.

I'm also having challenges with Mac Mail crashing, but have not tried multiple user accounts on this crash problem.

I'm stil have daily crashes since I updated to El Capitan, 3 weeks ago..

Cleaning the font cache as explained above seemed to help initially.. But when opening the 5th or 6th pdf file it crashed.

That's a bit longer than usual (typically 2nd or 3rd), but I might just have got lucky.

Can someone from Apple perhaps say something here?

I have never had this many crashes before on any system, and I chose Mac originally to have a stable system... this is not very good for your reputation :/

Honestly this is outrageous. Not only Preview crashes but it seems that everything linked to its libraries is crashing as well. I spend my days reading/generating PDF documents. I was tired of Preview, Safari (when you read PDFs within Safari), Skim crashing constantly. Therefore I moved to Acrobat Reader as my main PDF reader, and am now using chrome as a browser. May be if many people move away from apple stock apps, they will recognize a problem and fix it. Wasn't El Capitan a release focused on security and stability?! Well all I got from El Capitan until now is instability. Man I miss Steve Jobs.
