Can’t add card to Apple Pay

Going through settings or through the Wallet App, I keep getting the message when I tap "Add Credit or Debit Card". It says "Could not add card, try again later or contact your card issuer for more information".

This is on an iPhone 6 Plus that was formerly my phone that I've now switched over to my wife. We are setup with as Family members on iCloud which is tied to a Visa debit card. My wife is using her own iCloud ID on the phone, and I want to setup her Visa debit card to Apple Pay which is tied to the same bank account.

I've tried everything I can think of for the last two days and can't get passed that message.

I had the exact same problem. Here's a simple trick that finally worked for me. Go into settings > Touch ID and Passcode and turn Passcode off. Exit and open wallet. Go to add card and it will prompt you to turn Passcode back on. Do it through the prompts. When you go back you will now be able to add a card. Hope it works!

In an attempt to solve another issue, I did a factory restore and used the latest backup to restore. I added the card on file with Apple when prompted during setup and everything appears to be working as advertised. Have added several cards with no problem. Perhaps using the add cards later option is causing the issue?

I Wouldn't carry around the iPad to stores anyway. It simply says that it can't register. That's on my iPhone. My VISA did register and shows up on my Apple Store account. When I tried putting in that card on Wallet and the iPad it immediately registered. I also can't register a VISA debit card with another bank (just moved to another state). Very frustrating. On that one, it said to call the bank. I did and they can't say why it won't work. What is especially annoying is that originally on my 6 plus, I had no trouble with Wallet and had 3 different cards registered. It was only with the updating (new chip card) and OIS updates that there has been a problem.

I have followed all suggestions given to set up Apple Pay. Nothing has worked. I even called Apple Support and followed a Supervisor's suggestions including resetting my iPhone 6 Plus. That did not work either.. Before I upgraded to iOS 9 (now using 9.2) and received a new credit card with chip, I used Apple Pay successfully. Really discouraged at this time because I was quite pleased with it.

I'm currently having this same problem.

I set up apple pay successfully in september, and have used it. However I recently purchased an apple watch and tried to move my cards to it, and received a "Could not add card" error.

I tried to unpair and re-pair the watch, as well as restore the phone, delete and re-add the cards, etc.

At this point, my wallet doesn't even let me take pictures of the cards to be able to send them to my bank, it just outright tells me that I can't do it.

I Finally was able to add Apple Pay to my iPhone with the help of an Apple Tech Supervisor. I had to do a complete restore through iTunes. There is one difficulty now. Adding my credit card now required that I had to have it verified by my bank--a step that required me to answe a question posed about a transaction appearing on my latest bank statement, which statement I couldn't locate Immediately. When that was cleared up I was able to use Apple

Pay. What I didn't realize is that when I turned off my passcode (am disabled and do not go out much so didn't want to enter it each time I use my iPhone) I would immediately lose ApplePay again and have to repeat the whole process including verification with the bank again. So as much as I liked using Apple Pay, I can't see having to go through the enhanced installation process each time I go out of the house.

HI Susan, have you tried setting up Touch ID / Fingerprint recognition so that you don't have to use the passcode to unlock your phone. You can set up multiple fingers / thumbs to authenticate with. I have found Touch ID the single most useful feature on the iPhone. The 6S is so quick at recognition it unlocks the phone in no time which can be a bit annoying if you only wanted to check the time or see your notifications. I don't think you can use Apple Pay without a Passcode or Touch ID as the phone cancels all your Apple Pay registreed cards when you change or disable your passcode. You can still use your cards just not with Apple Pay until you reregisiter them with passcode enabled. If you have the feature and you can use it, Touch ID is definitely the way to go. I hope this helps.

Thank you!! Bank couldn't help; Apple Tech Support person had NO idea And was going to do research. THIS IS THE SOLUTION. read a lot of threads, but this is the only one with a solution. Wish I'd read it hours ago.

Settings --> Touch ID & Passcode

Enter current passcode

'Turn Passcode Off" (Note this will de-register any other cards you have got set up on that device, if any)

Goto Wallet

+ Apple Pay to add new card

You will now be prompted to set a passcode which is a mandatory requirement for Apple Pay

With a passcode set you should now be able to continue to register your contactless enabled card with Apple Pay

I went to the Apple store with the same issue, could not restore from backup and that add cards back.

He went to settings -> reset -> erase all content and settings.

The had me restore the phone - but select - The New iPhone option. After this I then restored the backup.

It all worked.. Had I saw the above first - I would have given it a shot.

I have tried every solution in this thread and cannot get my card to be added to my iWatch. The card was accepted just fine by my iPhone and I can see the option to add it to my iWatch from within the iWatch app on my iPhone.

Closing all of the applications and restarting my iPhone did produce a different error message, (something like) "Could not connect to Apple Pay, please try again later". The area I was at didn't have good cell reception but I was on Wi-Fi. I then moved to another area with good cell phone reception and the message is now back to "Card Not Added - Contact your card issuer for more information".

Resetting the passcode on the iWatch doesn't change the results. I still receive the message, "Card Not Added - Contact your card issuer for more information".

Have you had any luck with this yet?

I've spoken to Apple and their engineers looked into it further and they have come back and said the logs have been checked and the issue isn't with Apple. I've gone back to my bank for a third time and they have passed this on to their technical department. I suspect it isn't going to be an easy fix and one that will require a lot of phone calls from me!
