El Capitan - Bluetooth repeatedly disconnects on Mac Mini

after installing El Capitan ( 10.11), the bluetooth keeps disconnecting, then reconnecting.

Sometimes every 30 seconds. Tried to trace any conflicts, but no luck.

Does not matter what bluetooth is connected, it all goes down.

Had to shut down bluetooth, and buy a wireless mouse to replace my Magic Mouse.

is this a known bug?

Well, it's buggy behavior. Occurs on latest Sierra deploy. SMC resets, multiple mice manufacturers, multiple machines experiencing the issue. Hopefully it's a correctable software issue and not a hardware flaw... Looks like this for me, btw, with Bluetooth rapidly toggling back and forth between "Connected" and "Not Connected":

I've also been having this problem since updating to OS X 10.11. My magic trackpad and apple keyboard both disconnect periodically, at the same time, and then reconnect after several seconds. I've tried disconnecting USB devices then fully shutting down, that did nothing. I've also tried removing the profiles of all bluetooth devices and then pairing again, that did nothing. The update to OS X 10.11.2 also did nothing to change this, sadly. Any suggestions welcome!

Same issue here- iMac 27 Late 2013 - now on 10.11.2.

Can work perfectly well for hours and then suddenly the mouse scrolling will stop and the mouse will disconnect and reconnect. Sometimes the keyboard goes haywire and starts showing random characters - unrelated to anything you type. Tried all the usual steps - I don't have a wired device to try to be able to turn bluetooth off and on, or to delete all devices, because I have a wireless mouse, keyboard and trackpad.

I am certain this started with the upgrade to El Capitan.

Any suggestions welcome here too..

My problem was similar, but somewhat different. The keyboard stopped working, so I changed batteries (twice) but could never get the keyboard to connect. (Same keyboard as I have used for a few years). So I did the suggested SMC reset. While doing that, I mulled over the comments from others about nearby devices. So I checked my iPhone 6S and decided to shut off the Bluetooth on it - I had been setting my iPhone on my desk very close to the MacBook.

Then I tried a Bluetooth keyboard connect and it did so, immediately.

Sorry that I did two changes at the same time, which muddies if either or both changes fixed the problem.

Thanks radioroe! The idea of a nearby bluetooth device causing interference is an interesting one. I also leave my phone right on the desk. There were never any problems before El Capitan even with the phone nearby, but it's certainly worth a try. I also seem to notice that I have more disconnections when my wife is working on her (Windows) laptop in a nearby location. Intriguing, even though know it may all be irrelevant! I'll update, especially if this seems to work.

I have tried EVERYTHING posted on the forums:

  • Reset SMC
  • Turn off Wifi, turn it back on and reconnect bluetooth
  • Remove bluetooth connections that are listed from networking sidebar in system preferences
  • I've actually tried two different Magic Mice, same result: constant disconnects

There is no clear fix to this issue. This is a basic feature that is not functioning as intended, therefore it is definitely a bug of some sort. Anything like this that the user has to troubleshoot to this extent is not the fault of the user.

Apple, please fix this! I have wasted HOURS trying to get this to work, during time when I need to be working.

fwiw, as a data point, 10.11.3 didn't really change my bluetooth experience much from the way it was with 10.11.2 and Handoff turned off. Namely I go much longer between disconnections, and re-connections happen more quickly, but it still happens. The problem is bearable. Next step is to line my apartment walls with foil and lead to make an improvised Farady Cage.

(my keyboard just disconnected and reconnected, ha!)
