Can't disable Magic Mouse 2 scrolling

Hi,

my new Magic Mouse 2 is working fine on my venerable 2008 MacPro Octo with El Capitan installed. I cannot, however, turn off scrolling in the 'Accessibility' preferences. The tick box that used to be there under 'Mouse/Trackpad - Mouse Options...' is not visible. It becomes visible when I reconnect my old MM, but even then the setting doesn't seem to stick to the MM2. Anybody else observing this problem ?

Regards, Steven

Is there any way to get the defaults write command to work without having to reboot? I tried killall SystemUIServer, Finder, & Dock; none of which worked. I'm trying to turn on and off scrolling fairly often (scrolling goes haywire in one app) and would love to not have to reboot each time. However, I don't know what process (if any) I could kill to get the defaults write command to take effect.

Any help much appreciated 🙂

Hey Adrianna, I will attempt to break down AndersonIncorp's explanation into easy to follow steps.

  1. On your Mac, open the application "Terminal" - It's located in /Applications/Utilities/

The easiest way to open Terminal is with Spotlight – press ⌘ [Spacebar] – or click the magnifying glass icon in your menu bar, type "Terminal". Hit the return key, it should be the first result.

  2. Copy the following command to your clipboard (either by selecting the text, right-click and select "Copy" or simply ⌘ C )

defaults write com.apple.AppleMultitouchMouse MouseVerticalScroll -bool NO

  3. Paste the defaults write command into terminal, and press the return key (see screenshot). You'll know the command has been executed when a new line appears underneath, starting with (in my case) "iMac:~ Greg$"
  4. Reboot the computer, and scrolling will be disabled.User uploaded file
