No longer ability to Share ..with el Capitan

I upgraded my OSX to El Capitan last night. Not only did it drop out all my iCloud accounts in Mail, but now on Safari I have lost the facility under "Share Menu" to be able to share/send links, pages etc to Mail or F-B or other recipients. I have tried the keyboard shortcut using Command key plus "i" to make it happen. It does nothing now.

Any ideas anyone? Thank you.

Luis,

I have a similar issue: since upgrading to El Capitan the Share menu in Photos doesn't show mail anymore on my iMac. The problem only arose after the upgrade, before that it worked fine.

I've tried typing the suggested command into Terminal but that only results in a message within terminal saying" no such file or directory".

Any ideas you might have about overcoming this will be much appreciated.

That usually means you mistyped something... did you type it, or did you do a copy and paste? The latter option is better, because, well no typos.

Below is the command indicated in the link above. If you select the WHOLE LINE, copy, and paste into a Terminal window and press enter, do you get a "no such file or directory"?

OK thanks for that Luis.. I had to change the security permission to install it,but I am not sure what I should do now.. there are a lot of options to delete all sorts of things..I need to ensure I don't remove stuff I need or want to keep..as I d not have back-up!!

You should ALWAYS have a backup! (Time Machine + a clone of your drive made with SuperDuper! or Carbon Copy Cloner).

That said, OnyX is pretty safe. All it does is to clear files that the system will regenerate.

Quit all other applications.

Start OnyX, click on "Cleaning", then "User", check all the boxes and click Execute. Let it do its thing.

Restart your mac. You may have to reset some things, accept the dialog like you were running an app for the first time, etc, but you are not deleting anything essential. Try again the command to reset the sharing menu, and see if it now sticks after a restart.

No luck here Luis! Still the same result..I note that Stuart seems to have been successful withe the Terminal Fix.. but I ask myself if he has rebooted and checked that is still in place..anyway that doesn't resolve my own problem here..I have another programme that I use to clean rubbish etc called "CleanMyMac2"..I am just running that as it was due for a cleanup anyway.. I am not that optimistic now that it will resolve it. Its been a very frustrating day because whilst the Fix does it, it won't "stick". You have been very patient with me trying to walk me through the options.. not sure where we go from here..

DON'T!!!!

I wonder if using these programs is what caused your present predicament in the first place.

Dear Luis!

Thanks for all your help today.I had already run my CleanMyMac programme by the time you told me not to! I have been using this programme for at least a couple of years without any problems. It cleans out rubbish and I always notice an improvement following the fortnightly clean-out.

Certainly I had no Share Menu issues prior to the El Capitan upgrade and the fact that another user (Stuart) has encountered a similar issue, rather suggests that it was the upgraded version of OSX that has caused the problem in the first place.

The next conundrum has been the fact that your "Fix" has worked perfectly, straight off.. but for some reason a re-start or re-boot causes that fix to be discarded dumped. Is it a function of shut-down,rather than boot-up? I suspect it is something very simple in the end.. but quite what I have no idea and as we know computers can have minds of their own! Just as an aside it was only todays hat I engaged iCloud, although it was there in the background. I cannot think that this has anything to do with the Share Menu issue.

We know that under the "Guest" account the Share Menu seems to be fine. So why, I ask myself, does it not work for my own (Main user) account? The issue is a Safari issue it seems to me..I did ask the question about a re-install of El Capitan, but you never addressed that question.

Do you have either any further ideas or any contacts with the Apple developers who might be able to pinpoint the problem? A workaround is to either install the Fix every day after boot up, which is jolly inconvenient,or simply never shut the computer down overnight, but that also is not a very viable or desirable option. Even computers need a rest! I always shut down overnight;it is rare that I will leave it running (or my PC) for more than a day or two without shutting down.

If you are able to think of anything else..or pass this on to a colleague etc, I would be most grateful.

Many thanks for your efforts anyway,

Ivor

I am only a user, like you. I have no connection to Apple.

A CLEAN reinstall of El Capitan is likely to help.

Notice the all-caps?

In the last few days I have seen users reinstalling EC over and over in the hopes of fixing problems - only to reinstall their problems because they migrate their old system over. This is clearly a case where something from your user account, coming back from the previous system, is conflicting with something in EC.

That is why a clean guest user shows no such problem. Sharing does work in EC, for most users.

The really tough thing is to figure out what exactly causes this.

I see to escape routes:

1) Create a new user account, and use that instead. Some difficulties may arise in copying documents, mail, photo libraries.

2) [This can be done in a second partition or an external drive for the moment, in order to keep your present system available. ]

a) Clean install EC. Create a new account with the same short name as your present account (this is not mandatory, byt may help in step c) below)

b) Run it for a bit in this clean configuration, to check that it is working

c) Migrate ONLY your user account, not applications or settings. (if you named it exactly the same, you will be offered the option to merge those accounts; do so). Fingers crossed that everything will still be ok.

Hi there Nigel! I hope that Mr Jobs's successors will fix this issue in due course..but as a chum of mine pointed out, it is a very new upgrade,so don't expect miracles at this stage! What he did enlighten me about is that instead of shutting down to cold,(which I normally do, and he doesn't) or Logging Off,when it will lose the "fix"..just sent it to Sleep (same drop down menu as Shut Down) and when it wakes up.. Lo and Behold.. the Share Menu is still there! It is only a "workaround" but it saves you from reloading the Terminal fix every day! It is quite infuriating, just the same and the thing we cannot understand is why the fix actually works, but will not "stick" (or Save..)

If you should find a solution in the meantime, I would be most grateful if you will post it here!!

Best rearguards,

Ivor

OS X 10.11.1 has been released today.

I think that it is worth updating to see if this fixes it.

Some of the issues that have been afflicting people in this forum appear to be addressed by the update, according to the release notes.

FWIW, I did the update and everything appears to be fine (but then I did not suffer from this or any other issue - lucky me 🙂 )

Oct 22, 2015 2:57 AM in response to Luis Sequeira1

Dear Luis!

Well, the Update worked! Many thanks for letting me know about this and also many thanks to Apple for getting the fix out so quickly! All is well..for the moment!!

Best Wishes,

Ivor

(P.S. And once again may thanks for devoting your time to helping me resolve the issue originally. I think I learned a lot, just from the process, so in keeping with that old adage, "No time is ever fully wasted, if you learn something from it!!)
