Canoscan 8800F casualty of ElCapitan

A perfectly good scanner will not work with 10.11 because Canon is to lazy to develop a driver for it. I had worked with 10.10 and so I went back in time machine and found my old driver from 10.10 and added it to the Printer Library folder but didn't work. The reply to my email to Canon was that it was to old to develop a driver. What else might I use to get this thing to work? I don't use it a lot but I hate to get rid of a good machine. Ideas?

iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2012), OS X El Capitan (10.11)

Thank you for posting this, Lorenzo! I found this thread a week ago, before you'd posted. I was about to purchase VueScan, but after reading multiple reviews about the terrible customer service, I thought I'd check this thread one more time for updates. I had what I thought I was the latest version of MP Navigator EX, but it wouldn't open. For some strange reason, version 1.0.8 is newer than 5.0.x. Anyway, your solution worked. I understand that manufacturers at some point have to stop supporting legacy hardware and software, but the 8800F was one of their mid-range scanners (I bought it to replace a cheap CanoScan LiDE 30 that Canon had stopped supporting), it's still great, and there haven't been major advances in scanner technology that I'm aware of. Is writing hardware drivers that difficult?

Thanks much Lorenzo.

I have an older Canon printer all-in-one, a Pixma MP530.

I used to use MP Navigator for scanning, which no longer worked when I upgraded to Yosemite. I was then using Apple's "Image Capture" to scan in Yosemite which did the job.

After I downloaded El Capitan, I could no longer scan with Image Capture. Apple of course blamed the problem on Canon, which is fair, but didn't solve my problem.

I am now back on MP Navigator thanks to your advice.

Many thanks.

This is a bit late in the day but I have only just upgraded (?) to El Capitan. I found that neither Silverfast nor VueScan would work. VueScan suggests upgrading to their scanner driver but having done so I keep getting messages in VueScan to attach a scanner. Weird. It doesn't work for Silverfast either

I then noticed a reply for someone upgrading to an earlier version where their 8600F wouldn't work and found that if they downloaded Canon's driver software for Tiger everything was OK. So I tried it for El Capitan and now Silverfast works just fine. VueScan is still inoperative however but I can live with that if Silverfast is working.

Lorenzo, thanks so much. I've been pulling what's left of my hair out trying to get my Canon 8800F behaving nicely (in fact, at all) after updating to OSX El Cap. Your solution, to use MP Navigator EX, worked a treat. I followed ubele's advice and downloaded version 1.0.8 -- the only place I could find it was here ...

Now I have back my superb 8800F.

I just did a Google search the other day and got this link here from Canon Thailand site:

http://support-th.canon-asia.com/contents/TH/EN/0200327902.html

It says that the Version is 5.0.3 and that it is compatible with El Capitan. Strange though, that this file would only be found by Google on the Thailand site? That makes me suspicious. I don't want to import and install some odd trojans or viruses on my machine.

I downloaded the file and mounted it on my desktop. It does say Navigator EX Vers. 5.0.3, but I am afraid to try it out. It that site and file trustworthy?

Any thoughts on that?

The 8800 f incompatibility is the only reason I am still on Yosemite. I don't want to buy scan software for 100 € to be able to use it on El Capitan.

I went to the Canon site by searching for Canon and getting there through their Worldwide www.canon.com clicking on the Thailand (English) button and reaching http://www.canon.co.th/home?languageCode=EN next click on the Supports and Downloads button and you are where you want to be.

Incidentally, the 8600F is also disabled through ElCapitan. I've enquired of Silverfast and they do not know when or if any support will be offered to 8600F users and I assume that applies to the 8800F.

Canon still support the 9000F and later but for how long? Who can tell?

I find it disgraceful that Canon think it good customer relations to abandon support for equipment that is 5 years old or even less.

Epson I see still support scanners over 10 years old, I just found a driver for their Perfection 1250 PHOTO Flatbed Scanner for ElCapitan, on Epson's site. There is a review of it on the eopinions.com web site dating from 2002.

I will be voting with my wallet when I replace.

VueScan has put out a version of its software which works for the 8600F and, I assume the 8800F so all is not lost but I do prefer the SIlverFast suite by far.

Silverfast for the 8800F for El Capitan is available and I tested the demo. But for the version you really need to scan slides also, you have to shed out around 120,- €. I can almost buy a new scanner for that money, that ships with Silverfast SE.
