Canoscan 8800F casualty of ElCapitan

A perfectly good scanner will not work with 10.11 because Canon is to lazy to develop a driver for it. I had worked with 10.10 and so I went back in time machine and found my old driver from 10.10 and added it to the Printer Library folder but didn't work. The reply to my email to Canon was that it was to old to develop a driver. What else might I use to get this thing to work? I don't use it a lot but I hate to get rid of a good machine. Ideas?

Yes, I would appreciate the "instructions" from Canon, danuke. Thanks. Have they come out with a new driver, or are they just giving you old instructions?

Meanwhile, I have partial success with my Canon 8600F: I can make it work with CanoScan Toolbox 5.0 (which I like because it provides full control of the histogram, magnification, etc., in Preview mode--other software is dumbed down). I have to turn the scanner off and on again before each scan. Clunky, but it now works.

Here they are, direct from Canon; wishing you much success!

NOTE: after installation etc, the scanner will NOT show up in the printers and scanners preferences listing. Just trust the driver and applications. There is no new driver, but it works.

In order to check if your scanner is no longer working, let's check if you can still make it work by using the scanner driver for an older version of Mac. To download the driver for your scanner, please do the steps below. If you are having trouble loading the website, you can try opening the link in a different web browser like Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome.

  1. Unplug the USB cord from the scanner and computer.
  2. From your Mac computer, click HERE to go to our website.
  3. Underneath the picture of the scanner, click on DRIVERS & DOWNLOADS tab.
  4. You OPERATING SYSTEM will be automatically selected. Change it to OS X YOSEMITE v10.10. Under it, you will see the Recommended Downloads, Drivers, Software, Firmware and Utilities tabs.
  5. Click the DRIVERS tab and install the 8800F SCANNER DRIVER.
  6. Click the SOFTWARE tab and install the MP NAVIGATOR EX and the MP NAVIGATOR EX OPENER. If you are unable to install these files, please close any error messages and continue with the next steps.

Next, we have to delete any existing CanoScan 8800F scanner driver that you have in your system and then add the Canon driver. To do this, please perform the steps below:

  1. Click on the APPLE icon at the top left of your screen and then click on SYSTEM PREFERENCES.
  2. On that window, click on PRINTERS AND SCANNERS.
  3. If your scanner is listed on the left side of the screen, click on it, then click on the minus sign ➖ at the bottom of the list, and then confirm that you are deleting this scanner.
  4. Do the same to the other CanoScan 8800F scanner on the list.
  5. Reconnect your scanner. As long as the USB cable is properly connected, your computer will automatically add the recently installed Canon driver.

Attempt to scan using the Canon MP Navigator EX.

  1. Close everything on the screen. Make sure you are on the desktop.
  2. At the top of your screen, click GO > APPLICATIONS > CANON UTILITIES > MP NAVIGATOR EX > MP NAVIGATOR EX.

If you are unable to install or scan using the Canon MP Navigator EX, attempt to scan using the Image Capture program on your Mac computer.

  1. Close everything on the screen. Make sure you are on the desktop.
  2. At the top of your screen, click GO > APPLICATIONS > IMAGE CAPTURE.
  3. On the Image Capture Program, over to the left side, select your scanner under DEVICES.
  4. Click the SCAN button to start scanning.

If you are unable to scan using the Image Capture program, it appears that the scanner had to be replaced as it is not compatible with your version of Mac. Please know that the scanner is still functional using the operating system for which it was originally designed (Mac OS X 10.10 and below).

Upon checking the scanner's registration record, it appears that it was purchased last 4/28/2010.
