OSX 10.11.1 update crashes Apple Mail

I just updated to 10.11.1 and now Mail crashes as soon as it is opened.

In the brief time I see my mailboxes before the mail crashes all of the On My Mac mailboxes have gone again!

iMac, OS X El Capitan (10.11)

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

Step 1

For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

SYSTEM LOG QUERIES All Messages

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

View Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen.

In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Enter the name of the crashed application or process. For example, if Safari crashed, you would enter "Safari" (without the quotes.)

Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

Step 2

In the Console window, select

DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION User Diagnostic Reports

(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of crash reports. The name of each report starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report related to the process in question. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.

I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.

If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.

In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)

Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

When you post the log extract or the crash report, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the text on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

My mail app is crashing every time on launch also. Also found out that photo app is doing the same thing (which is more annoying as it makes an iPad go into a connected/unconnected loop when you plug it into the computer because photo app crashes then relaunches, then crashes, etc).

Logging in as guest doesnt have the issue.

Going to system settings, and enabling iCloud - the system settings locks up when after logging into iCloud & has the 'photos' app ticked for iCloud sync.

Do a backup, preferably 2 on 2 separate drives.

Quit Mail.

Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J. When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Go to Library/Containers/com.apple.mail. Move the folder com.apple.mail to your desktop. You must move the entire folder, not just the contents.

Restart, re-launch Mail and test. If the problem is solved, recreate any required Mail settings and import any emails you want to save from the folder on the desktop. You can then put the folder in the Trash. If the problem remains, return the folder to where you got it replacing the one that is there.

If that doesn’t solve it repeat the above using Containers/com.apple.MailServiceAgent.

I'M in a similar but not identical situation.

my 2015 retina iMac has two admin user accounts.

my wife's is the primary and she was logged in when OS X 10.11.1 was installed Two days ago. For her everything works fine.

when I logged in for the first time today, I was greeted by sign into iCloud, agree terms... And then, sign into iCloud, agree terms... A never ending loop.

i Skipped that step and it went through setting up and I was in.

i Found that I was signed in to iCloud but seemingly not properly; Notes would not sync ( there is only 1 note anyway).

then I got the bombshell! Open the mail app and it bounces from one end of the dock to the other, whilst flashing a dialogue box on screen that's says "migrating..." I don't get to see any mail.

holding cmd-Q shuts the mail app eventually.

i Signed out of iCloud. But if I try sign back in I just get a message that says I can't do it at this time.

if I log out of my user account and back in, nothing changes, I am still logged out of iCloud. If I shut down or restart, wife's account is fine but mine is back to square one with sign into iCloud, setting up etc, and I am again logged into iCloud sort of...

I have 1 POP, 1 IMAP and 1 cloud email address. I've tried disabling them to no avail.

Time machine shows the present mail app as 9.1 and the Yosemite version as 8.2 I think

I have both Time machine and seperate file backups and I'm tempted to delete my account and start again.

id quite like to rescue the POP emails but the others are external servers anyway.

anyone got any thoughts on a fix. There is clearly an iCloud problem going on. Keychain is not in use

thanks

Pete

Hi, I am in same situation with mail, Outlook is working fine...in Mail all accounts have disappeared when trying to add any account (iCloud or Gmail) nothing happen. Actually the first wrong thing that happened to me is to activate the iCloud at first re-start after update; I put my credentials and nothing happened so I choose active later...now I can´t configure iCloud.

Oct 24, 2015 7:56 AM in response to Big Apple cat

I try to fix that problem.

Try this:

  1. Deactive all internet accounts at system settings (You will need your passwords again in following steps)
  2. GO TO LIBRARY > MAIL > V3 and copy all the folders to your desktop (Mailboxes, Maildata a.s.o...)
  3. Start Mail (Should Work)
  4. Close Mail
  5. Copy back the folder Mailboxes, Maildata from Desktop to library/mail/v3
  6. Start Mail (Should Work)
Your marked messages should climp up, you will need to set the passwords again in system settings > internet accounts
  7. Close Mail
  8. Copy back every account step by step from Desktop to library/mail/v3
  9. Start Mail (Should Work)
  10. Activate the accounts again in system settings (set the pasword, correct some inbox-settings if needed)

Maybe the steps are a lil differnet in detail. Try with sense.

UPDATE

a further call further to Apple helpline has resulted in no user accounts being accessible, HDD erase and Internet recovery download of OS X 10.10 which is now ready to install when Apple call me back in the morning.

if I'm really lucky i should be able to point it to my time machine backup and get back to 10.10.4 which is where it will stay until 10.11.x works properly.

with hindsight, I should have just done a restore from the working user account while I had the opportunity. I won't make the same mistake again!
