El Capitan 10.11.1 Install Problems

hello guys,

after updating my macbook pro mid 2010 to 10.11.1 the loading bar stops after updating at the end. I never had this kind of problem.

The same thing happened to me (totally hung on reboot). And I couldn't even boot in safe mode after this update (10.11.1) finished screwing up my machine. Fortunately, I'd performed a paranoia backup (of my 10.11 image) using SuperDuper! to an external drive just prior to attempting the update. So I was ultimately able to boot from that and restore my boot disk. But I wasted my entire evening due to this rather insignificant ".1" update only to end up back where I started.

Stay away unless you're a masochist. But whatever you do, make sure you back up your machine.

Pretty shoddy work for ".1" incremental update, Apple. Especially one boasting to "Improve installer reliability"!

Froze on install, after 2 hours decided to reboot it.

Froze at about half way through reboot, or continued instal, who knows.

Reset NVRAM/PRAM.

Reboot froze at 100% of progress bar.

Couldn't boot into safe mode.

Created an El Capitan 10.11 install USB stick.

Booted into OPTION mode, and 'installed' 10.11 from USB.

Now have a working machine again.

What a waste of time.

If you are still under warranty, go to Apple. Time Machine back to Yosemite and turn off auto updates in App Store. I tried every suggestion found here in the forums without going into Terminal (hey, I know my limits and abilities...I don't mess with code).

Apple really dropped the ball on this one.

Best of luck!

Yet millions of users have updated without issue, makes me wonder whose ball was dropped.

Try starting your own thread and providing some detail, then you may get help that is relevant. Guessing is not a sensible method of diagnosing issues.

I don't think this is actually 'tacky', nor do I suspect it was intended to be.

It is a true and disappointing sentiment that the attention to correctness and detail that was embodied in Apple when Jobs was at the helm has started to slip.

Apple must not allow itself to become slipshod and clueless like many IT companies. The core ethos of most software vendors is to ship shoddy work and let someone else spot the bugs.

I am also dealing with this same issue on both 2011 MBP as well as a older MacMini. I ave tried every workaround I know of (my first Mac was a Lisa) and have been unable to:

  • repair the boot disk
  • restore the boot disk to 10.1
  • backup failed to boot properly (not sure what happened here - almost acted like it was infected with a virus)

In order to get one machine operational I had to re install El Capitan on the MBP backup disk, which eliminated all application data (office wants product key to do new setup -had 2 GB of mail on the backup)

Reading the posts on here it is apparent that this is not a unique problem I am experiencing although each user has slightly different variations. It would appear to me that the 10.11.1 update is the root cause of these problems and failures. First time in all my years of dealing with Apple that I have seen this significant an impact with a software update.

Anyone have any methods of restoring the internal boot disk of a MBP to 10.11 that will maintain user data that have worked for them?

Thanks

You might have to do a fresh install on you internal hard drive of El Cap, then restore your settings, preferences and data from the most recent time machine back up pre-update. I tried to restore before doing the fresh install and it didn't do anything to help, but when I did the fresh install, I was able to boot up and all my preferences, settings and data were there and ready to go.

Kinda weird, but its what worked for me.

Every time I restart this extensions are created:

BJUSBLoad.kext

CIJUSBLoad.kext

hp_io_enabler_compound.kext

and one of this or the 3 are the problem, in my case. I have to reboot form external USB, delete the extensions from the internal HD and then restart EVERY TIME!!!

I know, until I reinstall all the system (but next time will be Yosemite again...)

I lost 2 full days, did everything including erasing completely my HD, installing El Capitain and its 10.11.1 upgrade from scratch and then re-importing from Time Machine backup my files and data.

The upgrade 10.11.1 does not work and block my MacBook Pro during the booting process.

Everyone should wait until a new release is proposed !!!!!

DO NOT INSTAL 10.11.1 upgrade !

Ignore that advice, the upgrade works extremely well, million have already updated, a few have had problems but instead of dealing with them (with help is need be) they choose to complain.

All of my Macs have been upgraded, all work properly. Backup first if you don't already backup.

While the update went well with one of my Airbooks, it bricked another one. Given that users who use this or other forums are only a very small portion of the user community, and there are so many identical and smaller problems with this update even here, it's unconscionable that Apple hasn't fixed this, or, at least, withdrawn the update until it's bug-free.
