Mail won't start up after 10.11.1 and freezes my iMac

Hi,

When trying to start Mail on my mid 2011 iMac updated to el Capitan, it took an age to start but eventually worked as of yesterday (as long as I keep the app open) then this morning after updating to 10.11.1 everything else currently seems to work except Mail. If I click on the icon, not only does it not open, it makes the whole iMac go into a major go slow almost freezing and so takes an age to force a quit.

Tried multiple times with no success in opening Mail. Any advise please?

I don't know why I didn't mention this before but in my POP account the incoming mail server entry is greyed out. I suspect this is the root of the problem.

This too is not unusual. I see the same in my IMAP accounts as well.

Diane, I have just gotten off the phone with my ISP and they say it is a known problem with the new mail.app under el capitan. The app is not allowing insecure authentication of the user name and password in the mail account - even if allow insecure authentication box is checked. Evidently it needs to just be a plain authentication. Hope this makes sense.

You might want to demo Postbox and see if it works better than Mail with your account.

Here is a fix that I got from MacHow2 that solved my problem:

In the Advanced tab where you checked “allow insecure authentication”, make sure that the options “Automatically detect and maintain account settings” and “Use SSL” are unchecked.
