Slow Mac after updating to OS X 10.11.1

My one-year-old Macbook Pro (Mid-2012, 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5, 4 GB RAM, 500 GB HDD) is running slow after updating to OS X 10.11.1. All apps are taking longer to open, the response to clicks is often delayed and the spinning wheel is appearing much more frequently.

I've tried re-indexing Spotlight, verifying disk and clearing caches, but nothing has worked. I have enough free disk space.

It was running fast after updating to El Capitan (faster than Yosemite), but after installing the new update (10.11.1), it has become really slow.

I've had the same issue on this computer multiple times before. Typically, what happens is that its performance slows down (usually after performing troubleshooting procedures such as booting in safe mode and creating a new user for other issues), and only a clean install of the OS fixes the problem, after which it runs fast. However, the slowness returns after a few weeks (this time after updating to 10.11.1), and I'm forced to do a clean install again. I've performed clean install 6-7 times since I bought this Mac. I've even taken it to an authorized service center twice, but it passed the hardware tests both times.

Can someone please help me figure out why it slows down again and again and hopefully fix the problem?

I have exactly the same problem with the same hardware. I feel like it's not going to get sorted until 10.11.2 if at all.

I updated from Mac OS X 10.10 to 10.11.1 on my Macbook Pro 17" 2009 and Macbook Air 13" 2012. Right after I started experiencing data transfer issues. It takes about 7 hours to transfer 350 pictures about 1GB to my Drobo 5N NAS full of SSD over 1 gigabit network or over WiFi using the new Airport Extreme. When streaming video or audio from my local hard drive or from my NAS I get 3 to 4 min pauses every 10 min, lost connection to all my connected peripherals and network drives. I am having tried other wifi routers (Linksys, Cisco, Dlink) and different network switches with the same results. I reimaged my Macbook Pro with Mac OS X 10.11.1 from scratch experiencing the same issue. Replaced my local SSD (Samsung 840) on the Macbook Pro with a new one (Samsung 840 SSD), still the same issue.

I like Apple products but this time they put out some really crappy software.

I took my computer to the Apple store. The "genius" couldn't figure out what was making it so slow, so he asked if he could keep it and work on it, to try to re-install El Capitan, and if that didn't work, to re-partition and then install El Capitan. Then I could restore from my time capsule backup.

I gave him my permission, since I had a backup. The re-install failed to solve the problem, so he re-partitioned my computer (basically wiped it clean) and then installed El Capitan.

When I took it home and restored it, of course it restored i to the most recent backup, which was previous to when I updated to El Capitan. So when I restored it, it restored to Yosemite. It worked fine, just like before I had updated to El Capitan in the first place.

Then I updated to El Capitan AGAIN, and bingo! It was just as slow as when I updated to El Capitan the first time.

So I restored to my previous backup AGAIN, and now it's working fine, sans El Capitan.

I guess I'll just have to wait until they fix El Capitan. Whenever that will be.

Does anyone really know why El Capitan slows a computer down?

Nov 13, 2015 10:02 PM in response to miwealia

It may be SIP - the new security software in 10.11.1 - however you can (at your own risk, as they say) disable it - google the instructions and try - it's also reversible if you want to go back.

I did this on my mid-2015 mbp because my USB3 externals are running at USB2 speeds and it made no difference – however I think the computer is running faster.

Your computer is loaded with malware, namely Feelbegin, Totiteck, and Manroling. Download and run Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for Mac and to get rid of it. While you're at it, get rid of MacKeeper, that insidious, garbage program. You also need to get rid of ClamXav, because there is no virus currently in the wild that can do any damage to OS X. It's an unnecessary program.

I'm surprised your computer is even operational with all the junk that's on it right now.

Nov 20, 2015 3:19 PM in response to pinkstones

Thank you! I have done as you suggest and th items the report suggested deleting were the very ones you mentioned.. My only concern now is, I actually did not recognize *any* of those programs, meaning I never downloaded them. So I'm at a loss as to ho they got onto my computer. The google search function was lately replaced by aBing (not my doing) , and no matter how often i reset it to google, it kept showing Bing. Hopefully that is done with now too.

were these programs somehow loaded in with the El Capitan update?

Nov 20, 2015 3:52 PM in response to jjr1567

No. Upgrading to El Capitan did not put malware on your computer. Apple does not do that, nor will they ever, because that's horrid business sense. Trojans get on your system because you put them there, either accidentally or purposefully. The #1 way I've seen people here acquire malware/adware is through downloading torrents, frequenting shady websites (XXX and the like), or downloading otherwise innocuous programs/applications from aggregate sites like Download.com or Softonic, which often times bundles malware/adware in with the download. You should NEVER download from those sites, instead, getting whatever program it is straight from the developer themselves.

Nov 20, 2015 4:12 PM in response to pinkstones

OK-- this is making even less sense as I don't download things from websites except for the professional ones related to my business (music publishing). The problems exploded right after I upgraded to El Capitan so I assumed it was related to that. I was reminded that I downloaded MacKeeper (since gotten rid of) a couple years ago but otherwise, I recognized none of those other items at all. Thank you for your assistance though, I can already tell the computer is back to normal and running like it should be.

Nov 21, 2015 11:30 AM in response to jjr1567

Hello jjr1567,

It is always best to start your own thread for your own problem. This thread is someone else's and is over a month old.

First of all, MacKeeper is still alive and well on your machine.

Secondly, I don't know what you consider "normal" to be on this machine. You desperately need a RAM upgrade. That alone would likely double your speed. Since you are running El Capitan, you should really have an SSD too. That would make your machine about ten times faster. Since your hard drive is relatively empty, you can even get away with a smaller 240 GB SSD and save money.

Here are OWC's RAM upgrades for your machine: http://eshop.macsales.com/MyOWC/Upgrades.cfm?sort=pop&model=431&type=Memory
