When I try to insert a photo into word, photos is no longer listed under "media" in finder. How do I get that back?

The for sure way is to export the photos (file menu ==> export) to a desktop folder and use it fromt here

As a work-around select the photo in Photos, then drag it to the Desktop. From there you can insert it into your Word document.

Or update to a compatible Word version; the newest versions of Office are supposed to be compatible with Photos.

For me this is exactly the same issue.

if from Word, Outlook for mac 2011 I want attach a picture, photos is not listed, only iPhoto and photo boot.

Also with some websites, I cannot attach pictures from photos (again only iPhoto and photo boot are listed).

This has been as from the moment I got this 'photos' program with an update. and beside that, this photos program is lousy !! iPhoto was much better.

Just for the record - I installed Office 2016 with Word Version 15.13.4, and now I am having the inverse problem. Photos is showing in the Media Browser, but my iPhoto Library and Aperture library are no longer visible:

The same goes for the Photo Browser, it is also only showing Photos and Photo Booth.
