Q: how do i stop Imessage from capitalizing all letters of a proper name?

I am using an iPhone 5s with IOS 9.1 installed.  When I am typing a message in imessage the systems always capitalizes all the letters of a proper name. If I type the name Ashley, it auto corrects to ASHLEY.  If I type Gaby, it corrects to GABY.  The system seems to recognize first names and auto capitalizes only proper first names.  How can I get this to stop?

iPhone 5s, iOS 9.1

Check to make sure no one messed with your text shortcuts in Settings>General>Keyboard>Text Replacements.

If that's not the problem, correcting them a few times should fix it.

Thanks, I checked as you suggested but didn't notice anything out of the ordinary,  Regarding the correcting; one name continues to capitalize no matter how long I correct it; Gaby is always GABY.  (Of course, I text Gaby a lot and need to use her name often).

Finally, it occurs every time I introduce a new name into my texting.  I also have begun to notice it auto correcting when I use my iphone to type an e-mail.  I just installed IOS 9.1 on Friday and this began occurring much more frequently since then.  Does each IOS update cause your phone to have to re-learn names again?  Why does it even think there's a need to capitalize all letters or a proper name anyway?

    Thanks again for your response.

I've never seen this behavior before. Let me ask you this, do you have their names in your contacts with all capital letters? I know the device learns from things you receive, so it is almost as if it has seen this before. If you are using predictive text with messages, the far left entry of the three should be exactly what you type, and if you select it, it should learn after a while as Meg indicated.

I think you are on to something!  I do use all caps in my contacts list.  (Old man eyes can see the names better in all caps, lol)

I'll go back and type my contacts using upper and lower case and see what happens.

    Thanks for the potential solution!!

You're welcome. The iPhone uses existing information on the device when you type in similar information, as it assumes this is what you may be looking for. Hope this helps you.

It is for sure because you have the name in all caps in your contact list.  You can test this by finding a name that is all caps (and only one instance of the name in your contacts). Change the capitalization of a name in your contacts to something funky like joHn smiThwalla and you'll notice that is what it starts correcting to how it is in the contact list.

I have the same problem.  When I type the name Sean It autocorrects to SEAN.  I thought that was the only name but today I typed in the name Joe And it autocorrected to JOE.  I do not have the names in all caps in my contacts and I do not have it in my keyboard shortcuts. this is very annoying.

I would agree. Names in my contacts are not in caps, yet I am also having this problem. Any suggestions?

I have had this issue too which caused me to Google this subject. I  think for me it was because I had names in CAPS in my contacts.

I just went in and edited them and it seems to work. Thank you for asking this question, because this has been driving me crazy!

My phone capitalizes all Proper names and they are not capitalized on my contacts. it's every time and very annoying. My family has 5 iphones and everyone of them does this annoying capitalization. I have checked every suggestion posted on google and nothing stops it.

I find this quite interesting. I've not seen this type of behavior, and I wonder if there is some common denominator in all of the posters here. For you JackLttl, you say all 5 iPhones in your family do it. Are they all the same model of phone, ie. iPhone 5? Do you all use the same method for syncing your contacts, such as iCloud, or Gmail, or something like that? I would be interested in studying this more, since the closest I had seen was when I responded earlier to this thread where the OP had capitalized other contacts in their book. I'm not aware of any setting on the phone that would force that capitalization. Would you be willing to share any comparisons for your devices? Things your family has the same, things they have different?

We have 4 6 and 1 6s. It's strange you have not heard of this, The 11 people on my office who have 6 phones have the same issue. None of us share the same apple account nor do we live together. All phones are separate accounts.

Interesting. The only time I've heard of it is this particular thread. We have 5 iPhones and 3 iPad Minis on our account and none display this behavior. No one that I know that has an iPhone has this either. We have a variety of phones, a 5c, 5s, 6, 6s, and 6s Plus. The iPads are 2 1st generation iPad Minis and 1 iPad Mini 4.

Is this happening when you try to type in the message area itself, or in the contact name area? Do you have any Accessibility settings turned on? What country/region are you located in?

SC, it happens when we start someone's name in a text . It does not do it when we search contacts. It never happens in e-mails. So far we pinpointed it is in the body of a text and not the subject. it pops up as one of the choices and trumps all other choices.
