how do i stop Imessage from capitalizing all letters of a proper name?

I am using an iPhone 5s with IOS 9.1 installed. When I am typing a message in imessage the systems always capitalizes all the letters of a proper name. If I type the name Ashley, it auto corrects to ASHLEY. If I type Gaby, it corrects to GABY. The system seems to recognize first names and auto capitalizes only proper first names. How can I get this to stop?

iPhone 5s, iOS 9.1

This is happening because you have a contact saved with this name in all caps. This had me baffled for a lonh time, but i finally figured it out. Search for the offending contact and edit it so that only the first letter of the name is capitalized and you’re all good. You’re welcome!

This has been an interesting thread. I have had this problem for a long time. Most annoying has been when I type my name at end if text or email. Looked in Contacts and there are no Johns that are all caps. Tried to reset dictionary no luck. Then I remembered someone saying they had to wait a few minutes. Decided to reboot my phone (iPhone 6, latest iOS, AT&T provider) and low and behold no caps when I type JOHN...oh, wait a minute that all cap JOHN was an auto correct. Hope someone finds a solution. Very annoyed Apple user and I will repeat what someone said earlier. Thanks Apple! I know no one from Apple is listening but that does not prevent me from getting on my soap box and screaming sarcasm.

I have figured it out! It's actually coming from Gmail! Go into settings and contacts and disable your gmail imported contacts. They are all being imported in all caps. After I did that 99% of them went away, and the few that remained that still has all caps were ones I had entered a gmail address for. I changed all of those then put it to the rest. Went to type a text and it didn't auto correct it to all caps! Wooho! Such a relief!

I'm glad you figured out what your problem was. However, it points up the fact that this probably isn't a single problem. I sync my contacts to Gmail and have never seen this behavior. Of course, none of my Gmail contacts are typed all in caps.

I did all of the keyboard and dictionary resets that did not work by themselve, but the problem is definitely tied to my email accounts. It doesn't necessarily have to be gmail... it is any email account. The way I fixed the problem was I went to Settings, Contacts, then at the top of that page clicked on Accounts, selected my email account, then turned off the green switches for calendars, contacts, and mail (said yes at the prompts warning me they would be deleted from my phone) and clicked delete account. I rebooted the phone, started typing a text message containing one of the problem names (JOE) and no more all caps. This process of course deleted my email account that I can just go add back in later if I want, but more importantly it indicated for me that at least in my case this issue was absolutely connected to my email. You might be able to just click off the green switch for contacts for your email account(s) instead of actually deleting the account(s) if you don't want to completely delete. For me, the problem email account was one I no longer wanted on my phone, so deleting it was my solution. Worth a try to see if your email contacts are contributing to your issue.

Okay there are two issues going on in this thread. One is the all caps issue, and the other is when ios capitalizes common words that are also names in your contacts. I'm writing about the second issue.

A quick review of your contacts will show all kinds of common words that are also names, like Fine, White, Trainer, Day, Gray, Robin, Temple, Rose, Head. These are names AND they are words: fine, white, trainer, day, gray, robin, etc.

You can turn off Auto Caps under General --> Keyboard. That works! But if you do that then you have to capitalize the first word of every sentence after a period or a question mark.

Apple, if you are listening, the answer is simple: Under "Auto Caps" there should be an option: "For Auto Cap of words that are also names, don't capitalize." I would much rather have to capitalize the name of someone than constantly remove the capital letter from a common word. Hope this helps. Would love to hear from Apple, when they are going to fix this annoyance.

The names in my contacts list are not capitalized. Every time I type my own first name, it autocorrects to all caps. This is particularly annoying when I’m typing my email address since it’s awkward to place a cursor easily on an iPhone.

I solved the problem by going into Keyboards -> Text Replacement, and adding a new shortcut. The phrase is my first name “Joya” and the shortcut is all caps “JOYA.” This appears to have worked.

Thanks, I checked as you suggested but didn't notice anything out of the ordinary, Regarding the correcting; one name continues to capitalize no matter how long I correct it; Gaby is always GABY. (Of course, I text Gaby a lot and need to use her name often).

Finally, it occurs every time I introduce a new name into my texting. I also have begun to notice it auto correcting when I use my iphone to type an e-mail. I just installed IOS 9.1 on Friday and this began occurring much more frequently since then. Does each IOS update cause your phone to have to re-learn names again? Why does it even think there's a need to capitalize all letters or a proper name anyway?

Thanks again for your response.

I've never seen this behavior before. Let me ask you this, do you have their names in your contacts with all capital letters? I know the device learns from things you receive, so it is almost as if it has seen this before. If you are using predictive text with messages, the far left entry of the three should be exactly what you type, and if you select it, it should learn after a while as Meg indicated.
