Microphone not working with some apps after updating to iOS 9.1

Hi there,

After updating my iPhone 6 from iOS 8.4 to 9.1 (I learned to avoid first major updates the hard way) I noticed Siri wasn't listening anymore. First I thought something was misconfigurated from the update, but then I decided to do some tests with the headphones and it worked fine. I talked with some guys on the Apple chat support and they couldn't find anything wrong on the diagnostics. I already tried turning Siri off and on again, changing settings on voiceover and accessibility and did a factory reset without success. The weirdest thing is that voice memos, snapchat, video (from the camera app) and everything else is working fine, except the videos recorded within the Facebook Messenger app (and Siri).

Any thoughts?

So far I haven't received any word from tech support. I'll email them next week to see if anything has developed, although there might be a delay in response since we are going into the Thanksgiving weekend.

I have a feeling that this is more of an issue but most people don't even realize it unless they use Siri or have the issue with recording video.

I have the same issue: iPhone 6 Plus and iOS 9.1. The mic is not working with WhatsApp or Skype, but works fine for FaceTime. No apps are listed as having requested access to the mic in the Privacy settings, and the individual apps do not show mic as one of the settings to toggle in settings. I deleted and reinstalled Skype, and I also erased and restored the iPhone, nothing changed. Fix please! Thanks for any info :-)

Hi Crevolo and everyone else,

I emailed Apple support today -- the Apple tech support manager I chatted with -- to see if any developments or solutions have come up. I'll post anything here, but since I haven't heard from him for a couple of weeks, I figured the engineers are having an issue replicating the problem in the lab.

I was hoping that the new update would fix the issue too, but it didn't. And I have heard nothing from tech support.

I don't want to upgrade to a new phone and I don't want to get a refurbished one from Verizon, so I'm waiting and hoping that this will get fixed. In the meantime, if you want to use Siri use the headphones/mic that came with the phone. I suspect that if you use them, you should be able to do Skype as well. Or you can use Google the old fashioned way because it hears me just fine.

If you're doing video make sure you do a test video first to make sure the sound is recording. If it isn't, flip the camera to the front facing camera and then flip it back and that should turn the microphone back on (I don't know why) so when you record video the sound will be there.

I have the same problem with Siri and the microphone. It seems after updating to iOS 9.2 the "Hey Siri" function as well the normal Siri function with long pressin the home button isn't working anymore. When trying to set up "Hey Siri" it can only hear me if I yell very loud into the microphone But still not enough to register my command. There is also a problem when I make or receive a call and want to use the speaker function or hand free function. Then microphone does function at al which is very annoying. Please help.

I have iOS 9.2 and no, issue not resolved, still the same. I recently switched from the 6+ to the 6s+ and prior to switching, I had no problems whatsoever. I'm having issues with my microphone recording on SnapChat and Snapchat-esque apps but no issues recording videos with sound in Instagram or in Camera. Have not tried Skype but LINE works for me just fine.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled apps, hard reset my phone, restored my phone and nothing has helped. I've tried both front and rear facing cameras and the mics are working so it's not a broken mic. Called apple support and they were absolutely useless telling me that it must be the applications.

Hoping the next update helps.

Apple support advised me to restore my phone through iTunes but instead of using a back up to set up as a new phone and manually re-add all my apps. Has anyone tried this? It sounds SO tedious and if it doesn't work it'll be in vain

my mic also doesn't work in voice memos so i know it's a phone problem and not a third party app problem.

I don't know if that will work or not. I did my restore with the back up from iTunes and it didn't help. To re-add all the apps would take a long time and I can't see why or how that would fix it. Unless they expect you to restart the phone after each app and see if Siri starts working again (like the way you had to do with the old MACs when there was a startup conflict with a program).

In your case it might be a dead mic because my mic works in Voice Memos. Can you use the Google app? The one with the mic?

I tried it with google translate using the mic for "listen now" and I don't think it works. However video recording and Instagram video works for front and rear facing camera.

apple support said doing a restore through iTunes will "download a fresh iOS into the phone without the errors" or something. I don't know anymore.
