Microphone not working with some apps after updating to iOS 9.1

Hi there,

After updating my iPhone 6 from iOS 8.4 to 9.1 (I learned to avoid first major updates the hard way) I noticed Siri wasn't listening anymore. First I thought something was misconfigurated from the update, but then I decided to do some tests with the headphones and it worked fine. I talked with some guys on the Apple chat support and they couldn't find anything wrong on the diagnostics. I already tried turning Siri off and on again, changing settings on voiceover and accessibility and did a factory reset without success. The weirdest thing is that voice memos, snapchat, video (from the camera app) and everything else is working fine, except the videos recorded within the Facebook Messenger app (and Siri).

Any thoughts?

Here's a quick solution for those who have the following problem on iPhone 6 (I assume it works on other models as well)

NOT WORKING:

- Siri works, but she can't hear you

- Dictation can't hear you

- Front-facing camera records only background static in video mode

- Instagram's front-facing camera does the same as above

- When making a call, people can't hear you when on speaker mode

WORKING:

- Snapchat video records sound normally, front- and back cameras

- Voice control works

- Voice memos record normally

The first thing you should do is check whether all 3 microphones on your phone are functioning. The Voice memo app should take care of the bottom mic. Use the native Camera app to test out the remaining two. While recording video with the rear camera, give the little pinhole next to the lens a few firm taps with your fingers. Do the same with the front camera, tapping on the left-most corner of your receiver speaker. If the mics are working properly, you should hear a considerably loud thud when playing back the video. If the thud is faint or almost indiscernible, you probably have a dirty microphone. If there is absolutely no sound at all (be sure to do a very thorough check, if need be, scream loudly into the mic at point blank range), the mic will probably need replacing.

Buy a can of compressed air and carefully blow into the microphone ports meintioned above. It doesn't hurt to clean out the rest of the ports either.

This worked for me. I have no idea how I got crud in there and I only noticed it after Siri stopped working abruptly.

Again, if there is even the faintest sound while testing out the mics, this is not a software issue.

Hope this helps. Cheers.

Sorry to hear that, man. The way you describe it, it seems that both your bottom and rear mic are out. Why this would happen is beyond me, I've dropped my phone numerous times and even wound up with a broken screen which got replaced, and I have not experienced any hardware failures.

One thing to note though, I tried vacuuming the phone to no avail. Only after blasting it with compressed air for 10 or more seconds continuously, I could swear I saw the crud splatter through the receiver grating. It paid off to be persistent in my case.

JohnnyVoltage, You FIXED my issue! OMG, I can't believe it! 🙂

I tested each mic like you suggested and found that the front facing mic was only picking up static, so I used the compressed air, which fixed the front facing video/audio, and now Siri can hear me.

This is strange because I talked to a friend on speaker a few days ago and he heard me fine, so maybe that was a different microphone or it switched automatically to one that was working? I don't know, but Siri is hearing me fine now.

Everyone try the tests that JohnnyVoltage suggested and then clean the mic with compressed air and see if that fixes the issue.
