iPad asking for Passcode for "Other iPad" when setting up iCloud after reset

Hi All,

This is a strange one, and an issue I cannot find any information about.

I factory reset my iPad mini, went through the process of setting it back up and entering my Apple ID which was fine. Its trying to setup iCloud is where I am having issues.

After entering my Apple ID on the iCloud setup on the iPad, it prompts me for the passcode of the iPad but it then prompts me for another Passcode which is described as follows:

Enter Passcode for Other iPad

Access to your account is protected by the passcode for "Leigh's iPad". Your passcode is encrypted and cannot be read by Apple.

Well I don't have another iPad so I presume it is referring to the passcode I used before I reset the device, although its not accepting this passcode. I know its correct because I'd been using the same one for about 12 months and used it on the device up until I reset it literally 2 hours ago.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks

Leigh

I can only wish the first post on this thread was "not quite right"

I am so angry with Apple, I can't even see straight right now... I use profile manager to manage over 100 iPads in an Assisted Living community and the idiots at Apple have nearly destroyed the entire farm of devices in one, utterly stupid, update. I am chasing activation problems everywhere and their MDM system is USELESS.

</rant>

I have restored a device to factory settings after the 9.3 brick update. I am now trying to restore the iPad 2 by logging in to the users iCloud account on the iPad. I am able to enter the user ID and password. At some point, the system asked me to go to the other iCloud device and input the code in order to activate the iPad. The user has an iMac. I logged in to the system preferences on the iMac and went to the iCloud accounts. There, it explained that a device wanted to login and provided a code which I entered successfully on the iPad 2 for activation.

The iPad began to update, but stopped at a screen that told me I must enter the password from the "Other" iPad! This is new with any update I have ever done. I logged in to iCloud on the Website and used Find My iPhone. It listed one iPad. I removed it from the iCloud account and started over with the iPad activation. The exact same cycle took place a second time with activation hanging up when the device asked me to enter the password from the phantom "other" iPad. So... I logged into the iCloud on the iMac, reentered the login credentials and clicked on Account Details. That adds a dropdown window where I could select the tab for devices. In that tab, just like the iCloud on the web, I saw the iMac and the iPad. I removed the iPad from the account on the iMac.

Then, because this hasn't been time sucking bad enough, I started over on the iPad restore a 3rd time. Surprise!!! I got as far as I could before the device asked me again to input the password for the "other" iPad. There is no other iPad, there is no Password and there is no apparent way around this amazingly stupid problem..

I have to hand it to Apple. You people just don't want to be in this business, do you? Quality control team must be using medical marijuana...

I had a similar issue. I was setting up a brand new iPad. Did all the usual setup stuff, including setting up as new iPad rather than restoring any backups, entered my iCloud password, proceeded to authorise the new iPad from one of my trusted devices, then entered the 6 digit passcode two factor authentication code ... only to be prompted with another screen on the iPad asking me to input the passcode for my iPhone (!!!) in order to continue. Against my better judgement I input my iPhone's lock screen password into the field on my new iPad and the setup continued. Still don't understand why it prompted for this. It was a brand new device, I wasn't restoring from any backups, yet it needed the lock screen password from another one of my Apple devices to proceed. Anyone got any ideas about why my iPhone password was needed by my new iPad in order to setup?

This is happening to me on an old iPhone (now effectively used as iPod Touch), except it didn't start not in connection with a software update. Every night I get a text message to complete iCloud set-up by entering the password from another device. Especially strange as I was not updating software and I don't use iCloud. I can simply ignore the message, but getting it daily is an annoyance.

You are likely describing some part of the scenario not quite right.

For example, one possible scenario is this:

You entered your Apple ID and password just fine. You may then be trying to restore from a backup stored in iTunes on your computer with an encryption password.

If that is not what is happening, please describe exactly what you mean when you say:

"After entering my Apple ID on the iCloud setup on the iPad (for example, did you enter your Apple ID password there? Was it accepted?) ... it prompts me for the password of the iPad (really? Wouldn't it prompt you for the Apple ID password?) ..."

Thank you very much mtb1nary!

You have saved me spending even more hours busting my brain to find out how to solve the mystery of "The other iPad" when one doesn't exist.

Turning off two step verification and rebooting the iPad let me in.

What kind of idiots do this stuff with no warning??????

Apple make great devices but iTunes and all back up is just ridiculously bad.

The fact that developers are making great money selling apps that GET AROUND iTunes so you don't have to use it should really be sending a message that Apple hear! The fantastic idea that you create an interface that FORCES your users to buy media from them might have seemed smart in the dark ages but it simply doesn't work now. You really would think that they would wake up!

I figured it out. If you're caught in this cycle, go to appleid.apple.com and turn off two step authentication.

Once I shut that off, I was able to restore the iPad without the need for a password from the "other" iPad.

If you were using two step verification, the "other" passcode would have been the four digit passcode that Apple would have sent to the other trusted device. It is a time limited, temporary 4-digit code sent to another trusted device so you can verify your ID when setting up the restored device. It would have been received at the other decvice as an iMessage or find my device notification (i.e. it is not some other static account or access password that you created and use on another device).
