Apple TV 4 Turns TV ON with CEC but won't turn TV off

I've got a 70" Vizio P series TV and a Denon Amp connected via HDMI to the new Apple TV gen 4.

The aTV will turn on the TV and Amp when I wake it up and it turns the amp off when it goes to sleep, but it leaves the TV turned ON. Other CEC functions work like volume control and input selection, just the power off for the TV doesn't.

Anybody got any suggestions??

Thanks!

I reset my Appletv4, but nothing has changed, but I did try something else: I have another TV in my bedroom (39" LG I bought this year) so I plugged my Appletv into it to see how it would behave. The CEC behavior on it is different. It's flakey. Sometimes it turns ON the tv, sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes it turns OFF the tv, and sometimes it doesn't. Very strange and im beginning to think Appletv4 has CEC compatibility problems.

The Power Reset works but not a permeant fix. My LG UHD 49uf770t (Smartlink enabled) was working flawlessly with switching on and off with the apple tv 4th gen until i updated to TvOS 9.1, afterwards its stopped switching my LG off (would only work once every 20 times). after doing a power reset (ATV and LG) it seems to help but only once every 2-4times so far.

I have found that though my Sharp 1080p non smart does have CEC, it is limited to only turning on and not turning off when I turn on the Apple tv and it works great. The other side to that is when I turn my tv off with the tv remote, my CEC is suppose to turn off the Apple TV and the Directv box connected to it as well but doesn't, which might be solved with software updates. Just my experience with my personal tv.

I too have a 70 inch Vizio P series tv (P702ui-B3) and my Apple Tv can turn the tv on and adjust the volume however it cannot turn the tv off. Also the auto off feature doesn't really seem to be working for me either as it can take 30 minutes or more for it to show "No Signal" and even then if often doesn't turn off in ten minutes.

I also have a PS4 and Onkyo TX-NR636 and practically the same issue where those devices can turn the tv on but they cannot turn the tv OFF.

Vizio has publicly stated they fully support all CEC features: https://twitter.com/VIZIOsupport/status/662645032898416640 however their customer service/tech support has practically said everything but the fact they support it.

From researching it appears some Vizio Models have no issues. Almost everyone with a P series however ONLY has an issue with powering off via CEC. I've also emailed tech support and they suggested to call which as stated truly got me no where for the time being. If you do call the reps in South Dakota seem to be more knowledgable versus some other places (they state their location when they answer the call).

I've also personally contacted them on Twitter (the above link was not me) and I received some DM's and they stated it should work and would look into it however I'm not holding my breath.

I've also submitted feedback to apple. Even though this isn't an Apple issue from my testing I've seen situations where Apple has proactively contacted other companies to ensure devices work well. One example is I know from an Asus rep who releases beta firmware onto one of their forums has acknowledged they've worked with Apple regarding iOS WiFi issues in the last year.

So my two cents is to reach out to both companies both written and via phone because when I called in not a single person with Vizio had heard of this nor even knew it was possible to turn a tv off via CEC.

Interesting that your PS4 will not turn the Vizio off either. That does suggest that the issue is with the TV. I have an Xbox One connected to mine and that is able to turn the TV on and off without any issues. I need to do some investigation into the config as I'm not sure if it's using CEC or IR to do that. Will check back in one I know.

I read on Twitter that the Vizio E series does in fact work as expected. There's a new update coming out for Vizio Tv's which is 1.3.15-UHD but there's no formal release notes and they send out updates in batches in case there's something that messes up a lot of TV's so it could be a week or two before we even receive that update and zero guarantees that it will address this issue.

I have a Vizio 37" LED (Model # M370NV). The TV will turn off in response to Apple TV 4 CEC commands, but will not turn itself on. Calls to Vizio tech support did not help anything - "well, looks like that isn't working right", basically. They are not going to supply a firmware update to this TV, so I'm out of luck. I will NOT be buying Vizio again, that I assure you.

My other two Apple TV 4s, both connected to Samsung TVs, work just fine.

Weird, I recently got the new Apple TV and it would turn ON and OFF my TV. Then it just stopped working, after a couple days. Now it just turns OFF my TV and not ON anymore.

I use the same HDMI cable for my PS4 so I'd swap them back and forth. It worked when I did that. I called Apple and they had no fix, and to be honest I didn't feel like he cared.

Just wanted to add more to the list of people with the problem.

I'm using a Panasonic VT25 series plasma FYI.
