Apple TV keeps turning itself on after being put to sleep

So far my Apple TV has worked great. However, last night everytime I put it to sleep it would wake back up, by itself, after about 5min. The only fix I could find was to unplug the unit itself. Is this some type of software bug? Has anyone else had this issue?

Tech info: new Apple TV with the he Siri remote (4th gen I think)

TV is a Samsung flat screen (not sure the exact model #)

hooked up via hdmi and set to automatically turn on the tv.

Beginning about a month ago my 4th gen Apple TV began to spontaneously turn on my Sony Bravia television every night. So now I disconnect the HDMI cable before going to bed each night which prevents the problem. I hope Apple will fix the glitch because I do like the product, but this is now annoying and I'm thinking about switching to an android box.

This is definitely annoying that this blog isn’t originally from 2015 with no fix. I’ve had my Apple TV for several months and experience the same problem with my Samsung TV. Very obnoxious to go upstairs to bed and hear the Samsung TV chime of the TV coming on and I think stupid Apple TV ruining my pixels! First couple times I’d come downstairs the next day and my TV will have been on ALL NIGHT!

Thought for sure this had to be happening only to me. Just did a search on a whim - and low and behold, I am not alone. :-/

I have the 4th gen with Siri remote hooked up to a Panasonic plasma display. This has happened multiple times to me - even when watching shows on my cable box, which has a completely different input source! All of a sudden, it will just switch to the Apple TV input source and show whatever screen it was last on.

This morning, I heard music faintly playing in the house. Traced the source to... the Apple TV. It had turned itself on and was playing some seemingly random music source. Crazy!

Same problem here using Apple TV 4 gen and a Samsung tv. Mine will do it a few times every once in a while but then it may go a week without doing it. My Apple TV is plugged directly into the network so it’s not a wireless issue.

As a matter of fact, it just turned itself on in the other room...🤔

I actually downloaded the Apple TV remote on my iPhone so that I can turn it off from the bedroom with out getting up to go to the other end of the house when it happens.

Just bought a new Samsung mu7070 and since cabling it all up, my 4K Apple TV is turning itself on all the time. Definitely not the Apple TV, as it wasn't doing it before. It must be a connection to the new tele. Notice how many people are saying it's connected to a Samsung? (I appreciate it's not an exclusive issue to Samsungs, but most posters are saying they have a Samsung).

I have done all the aforementioned things (disabling TV control, changing wifi etc.) and no joy. It's permanently on.

Last night this happened to me for the first time. I have a 4K Apple TV connected to a Samsung 65" "UHD" TV. Set up so the ATV turns the TV on and off, and controls volume. Works beautifully, and have never seen this reported problem until last night when the TV came on unexpectedly at about 1:00 am.

I have since noted that the ATV updated itself to tvOS 11.3 during the night. I had recently set the ATV to update automatically, after years of keeping my ATV's set to update manually only after notification of an available update (my theory being that then I would know exactly when it happened in case something went awry).

So, it seems to me that when my ATV updated to 11.3 last night, it must have turned on my TV. Not good. I've set my ATV 4K back to disable automatic updating. Hopefully this will prevent the problem reported here. We'll see.

I ran into the same problem with a brand new Samsung and Apple TV 4k. I tried everything suggested here including multiple networks (2 wired and one wireless), disabling HDMI CEC, disabling AirPlay, etc.

Nothing worked. The Apple TV always wakes up a few seconds after putting it to sleep.

I have found a work around though. What you have to do is hold TV button on the Apple TV remote until the Sleep/Cancel screen comes up. Then using the Samsung remote switch to another input (like Live TV). Next just click the Apple TV remote touch pad area. This selects Sleep even though you can't see the options on the screen any more.

This works all the time for me. It's an irritating bug, but it's better than leaving the Apple TV running all the time.

I have another Apple TV (pre 4k model) with a Visio on the same wired network with default settings that never has this problem. I'm convinced that this is some Samsung/Apple compatibility issue. They should just communicate with each other and fix it.

Note that I left HDMI CEC on the Apple TV disabled, in part because it's a little irritating. I'm not sure if the work around works if you leave it on.

I have this same problem with my Samsung TV as well. I turned off all updating features and don't have any remote devices connected either that might possibly trigger a wake event. The newest tvOS 11.4 did not seem to fix it.

It is a bit absurd that most of the replies here are "I turned off all the convenient update and screencast features, and it still wakes from sleep mode". All the good work that goes into those making those features possible is being wasted because those features are being turned off in an effort to reduce the possibility of wake events being triggered.

A possible solution is to simply have a 'power off' feature in a new release. That would solve the issue for me, and save me a bit of money from my energy bill. Physically unplugging it to fully power it off, is a bit annoying (and not great for my back).

Apple, please (re)consider adding a 'power off' feature to your tvOS.
