Apple TV keeps turning itself on after being put to sleep

So far my Apple TV has worked great. However, last night everytime I put it to sleep it would wake back up, by itself, after about 5min. The only fix I could find was to unplug the unit itself. Is this some type of software bug? Has anyone else had this issue?

Tech info: new Apple TV with the he Siri remote (4th gen I think)

TV is a Samsung flat screen (not sure the exact model #)

hooked up via hdmi and set to automatically turn on the tv.

Hi havinabubble. First, it is clear that tvOS 10.2 has changed how Apple TV responds to external stimuli. But since these are not universal issues, it's not clear that Apple will choose to fix them. So affected users may need to find their own work-arounds. Second, do you have WiFi that Apple TV could connect to? Removing the ethernet cable causes it to try connecting to WiFi. Finally, if your problem is actually caused by the HDMI link, have you tried any steps to change that? Try a different HDMI port on the TV. Turn off HDMI-CEC on the TV and on Apple TV.

WiFi is currently not configured since I tried the RESET trick.

however I will look into the HDMI-CEC side of things, as I know at least two insomnia ATVs i'm involved with, are LG TV connected.

TIA

your initial response seemed to overlook the fact I didn't have the problem BEFORE i upgraded to 10.2.

I was aware it is new behaviour before I posted, but whilst the new software may let your TV turn on the Apple TV, it remains your TV that triggers the turning on (assuming that you have properly ruled out ethernet, wifi, BT and IR).

Just raising my hand, I'm having the same problem. "Apple TV v4, keeps waking from sleep after a random amount of time and going to screen saver." This isn't happening on my Apple TV v3.

Oddity to note, My Apple TV v4, one time when it woke up I found a message related to me having to re-login with my apple id. How did it lose my apple id password? I don't know if this situation is related. Maybe it's waking and checking for updates?

Thoughts?

I tend to agree.

I have three Apple TV 4 - one on a Vizio, one on a Sony and the last on a Samsung UHD. Prior to the Samsung, I had a Vizio (which died). Until adding the Samsung to the mix, all three Apple TVs worked just fine. Things changed with the Samsung. Now, when turning off the TV and sleeping the Apple TV using the Samsung universal remote, the TV turns off but the Apple TV sleeps for a few seconds and then wakes up forever. If I use the Apple remote to turn both off, the Apple TV does the same stunt but the Samsung TV also wakes back up.

Pretty obvious that the issue is with the TV.

I'm having this problem a lot. My apple tv 4 is connected to my sharp tv's. The remote will be sitting on a nightstand or table and all of a sudden, the tv and apple tv will be on. It's happening in the middle of the night and waking us up, so it's a bit of a problem. I can go back to 2 remotes, but having one remote is ideal.

I was thinking it would be some type of app update that was causing it, but I'm just guessing.

Anyone have a solution rather than resetting them all? This is a big annoyance.

Thanks

Diana.McCall good news 🙂

the release of 10.2.1 DID NOT resolve the issue.... 😟

however turning off SIMPLINK (LG's name for HMDI-CEC) worked on my setup! 🙂 thankyou for the suggestion.

Figuring out how to turn it off on my parents LG is another matter... but I'll get there (older LG TV)

frustrated that things where fine until Apple released 10.2,

but at least we have a solution to the Apple TV insomnia

Thanks again.

My TV is Sony. I only use apply TV for airplay iphone. So my apple TV has no apps other than the default from factory. I usually turns on airplay and the TV will turn on. After finish using apps, I stop airplay from iphone then use the apple TV remote to put TV into sleep. At first the TV would turn on itself randomly, so I update the apple TV software to the latest and turn off anything that might seem to do this in the setting. it would stop for a few weeks, then it will start happen frequently again. The apple TV home screen would indicate "remotely connected" sign on it. As I said I never installed any single app, so I refuse to believe it's getting hacked by malware. But I seem to have to unplug the Ethernet cable from the apple TV to resolve this. This is troublesome if I have to do this every time. My software is the latest and I have tried using all different hdmi ports on TV but no use. What do we do? Thanks

Hi twla. Do any devices in your household have the Plex app installed?

Do you have an NAS on your network, possibly running the twonky media server?

Do you have a computer running Beamer or Stremio?

These have all been reported as causing false AirPlay connections to Apple TV.

What model Apple TV do you have?

Which software version? Not just "the latest".

Nov 27, 2017 9:30 PM in response to Diana.McCall

Hi Diana, it's apple TV4 and version tvos 11.1. So in the network if other devices are running certain apps, there might be a chance to cause apple tv to turn on false airplay? The network only have some PC connected and some smart phones through wifi. There are also some smart TV but I have their wifi disabled. I don't have any of the apps mentioned in your post. But I guess I have youtube running on some phones although they are just installed but I hardly ever played it. I also play music that are played by web browser page on PC run by youtube. That's all.

When I saw the "remotely connected" sign, I thought other people in my neighborhood tried to connect their iphone into my apple TV. So I tried to change the setting in the network to allow connection only to my network instead of the default to everyone. But this change does not work because my iphone on the same network cannot find apple tv any more. So I changed back to everyone and figured they might not be able to connect anyway 'cause they need my apple id. But if someone else nearby just try to connect into my apple tv, would it cause tv to wake already? Thanks

Yes, peer-to-peer AirPlay will wake up Apple TV. They won't be able to connect because they cannot see the passcode on the TV screen. Nothing to do with your Apple ID.

If limiting AirPlay to your network doesn't work, you should make sure that all your devices are actually on the same network. Only the last octet of the IP addresses should be different. Also, if Apple TV is connected by ethernet, you may have a problem if your router doesn't bridge the wired and wireless networks.
