Pages autocorrects with wrong spelling

I've been noticing lately that when I write in Pages (version 5.5), oftentimes I will spell a word correctly, but after I hit the spacebar and move on to the next word, Pages will change the spelling of my correctly-spelled word to something totally incorrect that I didn't type. Sometimes it will repeat the last letter of the word, other times it just adds random letters to the middle of the word. Is there a way to stop this?

Also, when I want to use a word that isn't in the Apple dictionary, Pages will suggest a correction, which I decline, which Pages then changes my word to. Every time I go back and spell the word the way I want to, it keeps changing the word back to the one it suggested as soon as I hit the space bar. Is there an easier way to get it to accept my declining its suggestion than adding every word to the dictionary? (I'm a nursing student and there is a lot of medical terminology Pages doesn't recognize)

Thanks Barry- I'll try although it feels like shouting down a well.

Or maybe I'm supposed to just click, press, slide, tap or lick every pixel on every screen just to see if it does something, ala iOS.

Naw, that's crazy talk.

OK, rant over. I really have to work and this Pages spelling thing is driving me batty. Off to MS Word I go, reluctantly but at least it doesn't overwrite my text with nonsense that has to be manually corrected.

Hey this just started happening to me too. I have never had this problem before and something must be wrong somewhere. Mine has been happening starting today when I am typing fast (but correctly) and it will either duplicate the letters at the end of the word (e.g. it will change very to veryy) or, as stated above, will repeat the whole end section of a word (e.g. satisfying changes to satisfyingfying). The only thing that has changed is that I got the new MacBook with touch bar that I set up as a new Mac (so no typing history in my autocorrect dictionary to mess it up). Is it something with the Touch Bar that is affecting things? Or, if autocorrect is cloud based, is it something that's wrong with apple's servers? It could also be the app, because for me it has only been happening in Pages so far. I am on Pages 6.0.5. I checked the language setting as stated above but it didn't help. Hope Apple fixes this soon!

ethocmub: "any ideas?"

yames2000: "Hope Apple fixes this soon!"

Repeating my earlier post:

"To get this message to Apple, and to the Pages developers, use the Provide Pages Feedback menu item in the Pages menu in Pages.

"Here, you're talking to users of the software, who can provide you with solutions (or work arounds) that apply to the software as it exists today."

I called Apple Support because this issue was absolutely driving me insane. Every time I wrote a college paper, I had to spend twice as long as usual rereading and make sure autocorrect didn't correct my words to be something incorrect. And in under ten minutes, they fixed the issue. I couldn't tell you the steps they went through but it didn't take more than ten minutes to completely fix my problems. I suggest calling them because they know that it is an issue and are working on a permanent fix with a new update but can fix it for you in under ten minutes.

Don't worry about your shiny new machine, it's nothing to do with the Touch Bar. It's a software problem. I have this issue on a 2010 MacBook Air. Also, autocorrect has nothing to do with the cloud or Apple's servers. It is the App itself or as Peggy's suggestion implies, the Operating System generally. Having said that, I don't think I observe this behaviour in Notes or Evernote, but I'll pay closer attention and see if I do. In the meantime, I tried Peggy's suggestion with a twist, which is to turn off autocorrect in System Preferences but then turn it on again. Good luck.

Greetings briannaisbananas,

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities!

I understand that you are having an issue with Pages autocorrecting correctly spelled words and you would like a way for Pages to ignore these words without having to add them into the spelling dictionary.

The following Pages Help link may have some suggestions that will help you be more efficient in writing your papers for nursing school. It explains how to ignore a misspelling and how to ignore suggestions amongst may other helpful bits of information.
