Imovie 11 crashes with OS El Capitan

MacBook Pro (13-inch, Late 2011), Processor 2,4 GHz Intel Core i5, Memory 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3, Graphics Intel HD Graphics 3000 384 MB, OS X El Capitan 10.11.1.

Imovie 11 crashes at random when trying to add a transition, text, importing a movie, etc..

It is enough frustration that the beachball is now ever present everywhere and that I can't even open Google Chrome since I've upgraded to El Capitan 10.11.1, now I cannot edit video which is what I mainly use the Mac for.

I can't uninstall Imovie since I have many unfinished projects that I can't lose.

Please advise.

This is exactly what is happening to me, thumbnails invert upside down when hovering and it crashes if you try to use titles:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NHpf-y4p18M

It is ludicrous that if we don't have an older OS saved we are royally screwed.

Further worse when I try to update my Imovie to Imovie 10 on the app store it fails.

So basically I don't have Imovie anymore, which is 80% of what I need and use the mac for.

Apple should have warned us that Imovie 9.0.4 and 9.0.9 would not be compatible with OS El Capitan, don't they test these things before releasing their stuff?

If they won't fix this at least make the Imovie 10 update on the App store functional!!!!!!!!

Nov 18, 2015 7:13 PM in response to Semantics

What did you do to get the update to work?

I have the same problem with iMovie 9.0.9 on OS X El Capitan (10.11.1). For what I use it for, I can't upgrade to 10. I use it in combination with iDVD to create DVD's with chapter markers. Apple decided to remove that feature in iMovie 10 so it's of no use to me.

I have a mid-2010 MacBook Pro with NVIDIA GeForce 320M 256 MB graphics card, so I don't think it's the Intel HD Graphics 3000 card.

I've tried the following all to no avail:

  • Removed iMovie-related plist files
  • Removed all projects from iMovie
  • Removed iMovie 10 from my machine
  • Upgraded to 9.0.9

I would try a fresh install, but iMovie shipped with the Mac when I bought it 5+ years ago. I don't know of a way to do a fresh install.

Here's the first part of the crash report in case that can give someone some ideas on how to resolve.

Well, I figured out how to do a clean install, but it still has the same problem after doing that. Here's the procedure I used in case someone might find it useful:

  • Used the AppCleaner utility to remove iMovie and all related files
  • Emptied Trash
  • Restart
  • Downloaded the iMovie 9.0.9 update from Apple
  • Used the unpkg utility to extract the iMovie app out of the install package - The installer has a check for a previous version of iMovie and won't allow you to install the updated app. unpkg lets you install the app manually without doing the previous version check.
  • Copied the iMovie app from the extracted directory created by unpkg to the Applications folder - this is the manual installation of the app
  • Same problem as before 😟

Unfortunately, I see a downgrade back to Yosemite in my future.

Well, I tried doing a project and its unstable and crashing all the time...

Guess its time to pay for something... as I am sure they want 😉

What is there to purchase that will do the same simple editing as iMovie? Please let me know as I have not been able to use iMovie since upgrading to El Capitan (worst mistake I have done since being and ORIGINAL Apple user since 1985!!) This has been the worst decision since I have been using Apple operating system. Not one user has been able to help in the discussion boards ---> that should tell Apple something!

Nov 27, 2015 2:59 PM in response to realityisa

realityisa, there is a definite problem with iMovie 11 (version 9) and El Capitan. I have yet to find anyone that has been able to run this combination. One of the problems is that when you import photos they go black. So if you plan to run El Capitan you will need to upgrade to iMovie (version 10).

I have been running versions 8 & 9 for several years and love the interface. But the new version 10 is much like Final Cut Pro (which I also have). I don't like version 10 but it seems to run just fine with El Capitan (at least on my iMac. You realize it has been out since Oct. of 2013 so I think most of the bugs are worked out.

Normally when you upgraded to El Capitan that version should have been installed on your computer. If not you should be able to just download from the App Store. I just did that on my MacBook Pro while I was typing this reply and it seems to work fine.

Nov 27, 2015 3:17 PM in response to Rich Rydalch

Hello Rich,

I am running iMovie 10.1 and El Capitan and the application will not run. I get the dreaded "preparing media for share....." and iMovie stops responding 😟 I have to force quit everytime (and yes, I send a report to Apple dozens of times a day!) The application has been rendered useless. I have not been able to run iMovie since upgrading to El Capitan and I so wish I HAD NOT updated. I am still searching for an answer, but no one can help or explain why iMovie and El Capitan to do not work together.

Hi Rich, thanks for your reply.

But my late 2011 MacBook is now useless after the El Capitan update, as in it is only a piece of metal. Everything takes ages to load, I´m talking about 10-30 minutes to open an app. Beachball everywhere.

Furthermore, I can´t update to Imovie 10 because I get update failed and install failed error messages. I even put Imovie 9 in the trash to make a fresh install from the appstore but it won´t install.

I have not been able to use my Mac since I update to El Capitan and have tried everything. I even opened it up and cleaned it, disconnected the battery, etc.. I went from a fully functional Macbook Pro to a piece of metal from where I have half of my life and I can´t even recover the files since Iphoto doesn´t work either and my Mac now does not recognize my external hd memories so I can´t save up my videos.

I am disgusted by Apple and by this forced obsolescence and I am already looking at other companies´offerings to get a new machine.
